Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that asks questions about the nature of art and beauty. The Classical definition of art is the good, the true, the beautiful. Art equals something that is beautiful then it is true and leads the person experiencing it, to the good. While this may be the classical definition of art it is not quite accurate. To think that something is true and good just because it is beautiful is not right. There are three critiques of this definition which define art in a different light. Leo Tolstoy defines one as romantic art; “The essence of a work of art is the emotion it causes to an audience.” It makes everyone feel as one because they are all feeling the same emotion. Malcolm Bradbury defines modern art as a …show more content…
You have to listen to the meaning behind the note. As with John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” he wrote this song with four parts to it describing a religious experience he went through fighting drug addiction. The first part “Acknowledgement” the start of the saxophone is like a deep breath, the beats of the piano and drums start creating a feeling of almost tranquility in knowing love exists and there is hope. The next part “Resolution” starts out quiet and faint, then a loud saxophone blares and the drums and piano all come in at the same time almost chaotically. This showing the struggle in his head most likely when he was going through withdraws and was having a rough time staying committed. The third part “pursuance” the drums start and increase more rapidly, and more rapidly simulating a person running, chasing the love supreme he is looking for. The final part “Psalm” has the slower, calmer sounds of the saxophone and piano creating a sense of calm and happiness like he has accomplished his goal in overcoming his addictions and he is praising! Just these simple note to this song if one didn’t pay attention could miss the story Coltrane is telling and the emotions he went through. The last piece of music is a song written by Abe Meeropol a jewish teacher and union
Art is a way for humans to express creativity and imagination in various mediums of work. Art can come in the forms but are not limited to paintings, sculptures, architecture, statues, dramas, plays, music, and dance. To me, art is something that causes the person observing the artwork to feel a certain emotion such as pain, love, fear, or sadness. A great piece of artwork can make the viewer almost feel like they can replace themselves with those involved in the medium and feel the exact emotion as those in the piece feel. An example of this would be viewing the play Cyrano de Burgerac, where the playwright or artist of the play makes it possible for the viewers’ hearts to break as Roxane tells Cyrano how great the words of
In the contemplation of art, or rather the conceptually intangible definition it currently possess, it is imperative to be mindful that “art” has been utilized as a promotional device, ceremonial item, aesthetically purposed article or perhaps none of these or all. It is because of this vague term that Carolyn Dean, in her text, “The Trouble with (The Term) Art”, makes a case for the consequences of applying the term “art” in societies that lacked such a notion which also accounts for the Western-centric lens the field intrinsically utilizes when viewing non-Western art. The claim is deftly supported by the utilization of expert accounts in the subject, alternative perspectives for what is considered the current norm, and self-examining questions,
Art, by definition, is works created by artists: paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings (Merriam-Webster).
Regarding the wide aspect of art, Georgia O’Keeffe, an American artist, said “filling a space in a beautiful way. That's what art means to me.” I think this means that anything that is beautiful to someone can be art; but something one person finds beautiful may not be to someone else. This is what causes art to be such a wide and distinct topic; everything depends on the person. Something I find beautiful and consider art could be unattractive to someone else. Although I do agree with the quotation said by Georgia O’Keeffe, I do not think a piece has to be attractive to be art. Many artists have purposely created an art piece to not be beautiful. To me, art is a way of expressing emotions in a way you think is unique and original. It is not
Explain the aesthetic definition of art. Is it plausible? Explain why, or why not, with specific reference to literature.
The relationship with my patient was built upon communication. As my patient didn’t speak much English, I was able to speak to him throughout clinical in Spanish. The Spanish language was an imperative aspect of our relationship, being able to speak in this language allowed my patient to freely talk to me without difficulty. Our relationship was like a book, as each time I spoke with him about something new, I would be turning to a new page with a different passage being read. Each of these pages are read in Spanish, as I spoke to my patient in this language. The pages represent something I said in Spanish to my patient during clinical.
Shepard Fairey’s piece titled Pay Up or Shut Up is a representation of the role that money or your role in society dictate the power of your speech. This piece of art by Fairey was released in May of 2015. It is a screen print on cream speckletone paper.
“The Madonna and Child with Saint Anne and an Angel” is an art piece with many different art principles and elements that are conveyed in such a manor that alludes complexity and great importance. The picture consists of four individuals- an angel, a baby, a Madonna or mother, and Saint Anne. The baby, cradled and asleep, is being overlooked by an angel, as the angel seems to be covering the child with a white blanket and much great care. Contrary to modern pictures, the angel has black wings wearing normal clothes similar to that of the mother and Saint. An important characteristic of the baby is that he has bright blonde and orange hair, a trait that resembles Jesus Christ. The mother and Saint Anne seem to be having a very important face-to-face discussion. All characters in the painting, including the child, are wearing late 15th century early 16th century clothing (rags and clothe looking material dresses) and recognizable colors.
Most people judge whether something is art by its quality while others see it only when it evokes an emotional response from its audience. Art, however, simply needs a
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person’s perspective. Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of expressing one’s self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and sculptures.
The most important trait in defining art is its beauty. As complex as the term “art” can be, the term “beauty” is nearly just as complicated. In order to understand art more clearly it is important to understand beauty. “We label an object beautiful because it promotes an internal harmony or ‘free play’ of our mental faculties; we call something ‘beautiful’ when it elicits this pleasure.” (Freeland 8). As defined above, beauty is not a direct message. It is something that subconsciously allows man to feel good and pleasurable. There is “an internal harmony” when we observe something beautiful that allows us to take away a deeper understanding of a work of art regardless of it being “nice looking” or “ugly”.
Art, what is Art? It is an ambiguous matter: without an exact form, an exact meaning. Does it have any rules or restrictions? However, it can be a great influence on the lives of people. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, two lovers have fell in and out of love due to Art!
When trying to define art, humankind runs in to many difficulties. Traditional concepts of art include painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography. Art can also be one
Art is the conscious creation of something beautiful or meaningful using skill and imagination, it is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power:
Life consists of constant cycles of spontaneous outbursts of joy and unexpected disappointments; there is an upside to this repetitive tug of war. On this rock we call home, we are surrounded by the most gorgeous creations, structures, and landscapes that add a touch of serenity to our miserable existences called aesthetics. Aesthetics as an adjective is defined as concern with beauty of the appreciation of beauty. As a noun it means a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic movement. The surrounding beauty that we take for continuous granted is significant towards our existence. In everyday interaction, we straddle the line between aesthetic judgement, where we appreciate any object, instead
