Stereotypical representation in entertainment media has long been and continues to be a reoccurring issue. Diversity representation in entertainment media has been debated over and over again, and still continues to be a major problem. The historical representation of African Americans in theatre and comedic performances still largely affects the stereotypical representation of African American males today. More often than not, when a male African American body is placed into a theatric arena, they are automatically stereotyped to only acting in a certain way. A now very famous example, actor Chris Rock has arguably made a significant living off of his big facial characterizations and vocal appeal. Rock has therefore appeared in several movies exactly as he has been portrayed time and time again. The actor plays a notable role in the animated movie Madagascar, as the Zebra named Marty. Marty has a very rambunctious personality, always the life of the party, and the epitome of comedic relief as an animated character. The physique of the football player has to be top-notch, but audience members also expect the athlete to be less than smart, have an attitude problem, and not use proper grammar. Therefore, even though black comedy plays a huge role in our current entertainment media, African American men are stereotyped in other roles as well. Not to claim however, that Chris Rock’s entire career is faulty in any way, however one can clearly point out how and why he continues to play the roles that he does.
