This article brings the topic of discrimination to light especially for women. The unfair treatment that women face every day in the workplace is one of the crippling factors to our society. In the workplace Women are considered minorities making it possible for discrimination and other oppressive factors to creep in. Personally, as an African American woman I have faced unfair treatment in the workplace. Seeing your coworker get prompted over myself just because he is a male. Men are often looked at as masculine and authoritative. My mother was a single mother of two and still held a fulltime job. Always excelling in her position. She worked hard and never lacked in her motherly duties. Being a mother is looked as a weakness in the job force. Men believe that women are incapable of being a great employees and mothers. The mommy track is helpful for mothers. it gives mother flexible hours to work so they also still care for their children. This is a great resource but often time when do use the available resource; their commitment to their position is questioned. During Crenshaw’s talk, she focused on the intersectional discrimination African American women face. She got her point across by having the audience listen to and try to recognize names of black men and women who experienced police brutality. I believe the main reason society has not recognized these types of victims is due to lack of media coverage. Particularly African American women who wanted to help in the war faced discrimination in race and gender. The disadvantage of both combined at the time with judgement toward a women’s capacity and the racial prejudice against African American women. Due to the fact that the numbers of men drafted in the war left a large portion of jobs open to first white women and the leftover opportunity left for the other race.
