African American Women : The Black Woman

The life of African American Woman in America is not an easy one, for years the Black Woman has had to face adversity. We were brought into this world not with one minority but with two minorities put against us, the first is the fact that we are a woman and the second is that are African American. Because of that for years we have been subject to not only sexism but racism. The Black Feminist Theory revolves around the exact injustices of African-American women, “A black woman is oppressed by patriarchy, black feminists observe, not just because she’s a woman but because she’s a black woman, a category that has been defined historically in America as less valuable than the category of white woman. From this text, we are introduced to the different types of pain Black women had to go through during this time. Martha was separated from her family as a whole an instead of being depressed she had to continue on with her life, and serve her new master. The Black feminist theory suggest that “the experiences gained from living as an African American woman stimulate a Black Feminist sensibility (Collins 20).” It is from this approach, readers learn that black women must be strong because her inner pain must be hidden, or her pain will often go unnoticed. At the end of the day, the black woman’s emotions did not matter. Therefore, at a young age Black women are taught that this is normal and because it is normal one must not dwell on that pain. Instead, you must take this experience and move forward which is exactly what Martha does. Through the black feminist approach, we are able to see just how strong of a woman Martha actually was. And although Martha could have given up on life after being removed from her family she continued to live because she was determined to be free. Not only did Martha continue to live for her she also constantly hoped for best for her husband “Martha held on to some hope, for Lucas was a man who never failed to make friends with dogs (Phillips 78).
