A young filmmaker who ended up creating one of the most iconic movies in history once said, “Ive been toying with this idea of a space-opera fantasy film in the view of Flash Gordon.” (Taylor 85) Little did George Lucas, director of Star Wars, know that idea that was stirring in his head would become one of the most well known movies in history.
There are few people in the world who have not hear of Star Wars. The daring tale of Luke Skywalker’s journey to defeat the evil Empire led by Darth Vader and restore peace to the galaxy is so well-known that people who have never seen the movies know the basic plot line or at least know the phrase said multiple times, “May the Force be with you.” Star Wars immediately changed the world because of …show more content…

This movie was very difficult to film because of the weather conditions and the sets. Tunisia, where many of the Tatooine scenes were filmed, was very rainy and cloudy. This caused extreme stress for George which would only get worse with time. After filming in Tunisia, they traveled to London to film scenes in the spaceships and the Death Star. There Peter Diamond, the stunt coordinator and the tusken raider in the movie, was in charge of one of the hardest scenes to shoot in Star Wars. Luke and Leia are trying to escape the stormtroopers when they find that they are at a dead end. Behind them are the stormtroopers trying to break open the closed door and in front of them is a giant chasm and no bridge to get across. Diamond said “... remember we are about 20 meters up, and as we swung across there was a terrible tear and my buddy said to me, ‘Peter your harness has snapped.’” (Empire of Dreams) When Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker, asked what happened Diamond lied and said he ripped his pants. The scene was shot in only one take and no one got hurt. Not very many movies during that time had people swinging across chasms which explains why this kind of dangerous filming was never really done before.
