Against Horse Racing Grace Jackson Have you ever been to a horse race? Seeing the riders give their horses a pat and an apple after the race, people cheering for their horse as it runs rapidly to the finish line? Seems like a great time. But what happens to those horses after they are done their race. What happens to the people who gambled their family’s lives savings. All horse racing should be shut down due to the well being of the horses, the effects of gambling, and the lack of interest. Just as the well being of humans, horses have a right to the same care and respect. We cannot just use them as entertainment. But as you will see, sadly, that is not the case. An example of horrible treatment of horses is... In Musselburgh, Scotland, a horse named Madelyn Blue shattered his leg in the last race of the day. It was described as, “...appalling... there was just skin holding the leg on...”. Even after the “appalling” injury, he still continued to race, like before. Due to the horses feeling no pain from their injuries, they become very sick, and infected. The result is 400 horses are raced to death every year. Let's not let one more. It seems so harmless, betting 5$ on your favorite horse. Waiting for it to win and it doesn't. So, one more time. Ten more times. What happens when it never ends. Horse racing should be stopped due to the effects of gambling. Gambling is an addiction. The definition of addiction is “Being abnormally tolerant to and dependant on something that is psychologically or physically habit forming.” or “an abnormally strong craving”. There are the different parts that make up a gambler. The winning phase, The desperation phase, and the losing phase. The winning phase fuels their addiction. More money = more gambling. The desperation phase take them on a rant for more money. So, horse racing gambling raises crime rates which turns into more taxpayers money being used to help with the damage of the rant the gambler went on. People could get hurt, or businesses ruined. That money used for repairing the damages could be used for education, safety, and making that specific country a better place. It
