The age of exploration. An era known mainly for the amount of discoveries made during it’s time. It was a period not only important to America but to every country on Earth. Explorers would travel the globe carrying all sorts of livestock and crops in search for unexplored territories. Although it has had many great effects, many horrible events took place during the age of exploration. From the slave trade, to genocide, and even the spread of disease it could be said that the age of exploration was also the age of tragedy.
The age of exploration was driven by many causes. One of the biggest reasons being the desire to find a new route to Asia. The yearn for riches and spices was high and both could be found in the heart of Asia.

Over the time of this era we as humans were able to form bonds between different countries through trade. Things such as livestock, crops, and even religion were spread through trade. Missionaries traveled from Europe to the Americas in order to spread the word of Christianity from person to person. Trade spread throughout many large continents such as Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. (Doc 3) This Global trade and it’s effects are still apparent today. Many crops that are known for being popularly grown in certain locations weren’t even originally grown there. Crops such as Irish potatoes are famous for being from Ireland even though they originated in the Americas. (Doc 6) The finding of gold and other treasures was also apparent. One of the worst things to come out of this time was slavery. African villages would be invaded and Africans would be slaughtered. Those who lived would be enslaved and put on ships where they would be put in small cramped areas body to body off to the Americas to be sold to others and be used for work such as cotton picking. (Doc 4) Native Americans were also enslaved when Europeans and spanish conquistadors began to take over the Americas. Both Africans and Native Americans would be whipped and tortured if they did not heed their orders. (Doc 1) War was another effect of the age of exploration. When groups of people unwilling to give up their land to Spanish conquistadors would fight back things could get messy. This resulted in large amount of civilizations being wiped out and many innocent people being slaughtered. Many countries in the same continent began to wage war. As exploration widened affecting the economic development for merchants, there was an increase of social division between the poor and the rich. While monarchs, nobility and the new wealthy merchants lived in luxuries, the lower class (labourers) did not have enough to support their families.
The Renaissance period was the time period in which Montaigne lived. Montaigne was a famous writer of his time. This was a time of rebirth and awakening the artistic side of humans. In this time, the French Wars of Religion occurred. From 1562 to 1598, people fought over the religion that was right, catholic, protestant, christian, etc. and they tortured those who were enemies or those who didn't agree with their beliefs. Theses tortures were anything from tearing apart limbs to drowning to burning to stoning.
The Age of Exploration was a time in which, the America’s landscape was forever changed. European involvement caused a drastic change in almost every aspect imaginable. While, Europeans paraded with ships filled with gold and new foods, the indigenous people of the Americas would see their culture, language, and religion forgotten and forbidden. The Age of Exploration and Discovery was a large turning point for the world. It opened up a whole new way of life and living for people. It taught people that there was more to the world than their hometown, country or even continent. With this came some negative effects on certain groups of people. Many contributing factors came together to make this era and “New World.” The choices of explorers, the people who already occupied the land and the motives that filled each person who came over seas contributed to creating this New World. As well as that, trade skyrocketed the Age of Exploration and Discovery. This first form of trade was called the Columbian exchange. It was named the Columbian exchange because it was the first form of trade Christopher Columbus had with the people of the New World. Many things came from these trades including the first idea of Global trade. While there seems to be some positive effects coming from the Columbian Exchange, they do not outweigh the negatives effects dawned upon the New World.
