• What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?
Ageism is prejudice against a group who is of old age and discriminated against solely based on their age. This group is usually men and women whose age is 40 or older. • Is the number of aging population expected to rise in numbers or decrease?
Yes, it is expected to increase and this is also due to the fact of the baby boomer era. The population grew drastically between the years of 1946-1964, due to the rapid growth and the large numbers born during that time, it is said that by 2030, 46% of the population will be 65 or older. By taking these numbers into consideration that makes one in five people will be of old age by 2030
• What types of legislation may or may not be affected by the aging population?
One of the biggest issues that will be affected is Social Security benefits and medical care for everyone. Today twelve percent of the total population is age 65older; by 2080 it will be up to 23%. However at the same time the working-age is shrinking every year, right now the working-age it is 60% and it is believed to drop to 45% by 2080. Social Security is experiencing low work-to-beneficiary ratio which will fall from 3.3 percent in 2005 to two percent in 2040. That is the year that is believed to be when the Social Security trust fund will have been exhausted. Due to this there will be significant challenges that policymakers and all future Americans. Because of that policymakers are now encouraging many to delay retirement and some people are even suggesting that retirement benefits be lowered the main reason for the suggestion is people are living longer than they used to.
• How does
The people from the baby boomer generation are all nearing, if not already in, retirement and old age. Over the next 20 years the amount of elderly people of retirement age is supposed to increase somewhere around 50%. Because of this imbalance there will be a lot of money being directed toward taking care of the baby boomer generation which may lead to decreased funding for younger generations. The baby boomers will all retire around the same time, leaving jobs unfilled. There may also be troubles in the housing market as there may not be enough young people to buy all the houses they sell. The number of immigrants in America are increasing and replacing the baby boomers in being the dominating group in our population.

Answer the following questions in 100 to 250 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use.
According to a USA Today article from last year, nearly sixty percent of Americans have more than $25,000 put away for retirement. Thirty-six percent of Americans have less than $1000 saved for later in life. This means that as more people, especially the baby boomer generation, retire, there will be more strain on program such as Social Security and Medicare, and ultimately the federal budget that is responsible for these programs. If steps are taken now to close this gap, we will insure the continued longevity of these programs by raising the tax contributions flowing into both Social Security and Medicare.

The issues affecting he baby boomer generation is the possibility of lack of funds for them takes care of themselves. The amount of baby boomers is also a concern, because there are so many people turning 65 at the same time that mean they will also be eligible for Medicare at the same time.
The fact that the American population is aging has raised concerns. In 2011, the number of adults over the age of 65 reached 41.4 million, which account for 13.3% of the population ("A Profile of Older Americans: 2012," 2012). It is estimated that there will be about 71 million older adults by 2030 ("Healthy Aging-Improving and Extending Quality of Life among Older Americans," 2009). Approximately 2.1 million elderly are currently living in
For many elderly, the nursing homes are their only primary option. As American ages with extended life expectancy, more people will become residents of nursing homes. According to report, the aging "baby boomer generation" will demand more long-term care services over the next half century. The number of individuals that will use either nursing facilities or home care services is "expected increase to from 15 million in 2000 to 27 million in 2050" (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003). This figure will increase as the number of elderly will need such care, "with estimates of as many as 8 million in 2000 to 19 million in 2050" (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003). The growth of the baby boomer population has brought
This is all very scary for the future, interest of our country. “From 2012 to 2021… Social Security would rise 27 percent and Medicare, 32 percent”(Samuelson, 2011,sec.3) In my opinion with the higher life expectancy of our nation we need to move the age for Medicare benefits up higher to reflect the increase in life
From 1946 to 1964 approximately 4 million people were born each year in the United States. This was the greatest surge in births of any period prior or since. In 2006 the first of these so called baby boomers turned 60 and began settling into early retirement. In 2011 the first of them turned 65, the traditional retirement age. This year another 4 million will join the ranks of the retired. Many feel the passage of the PPACA came just in the nick of time to save the ailing Medicare system that this growing senior population relies on. Medicare's financial challenges would be far greater without the health care reform
Ageism is defined as “prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group and especially the elderly” (Webster). On page 4, Virginia says, “Mrs. Otis and I are from Whistle Stop … her son and daughter-in-law had a fit for her to come and live at the nursing home, and they asked me to come with her. I told them I’d stay with her for a while—she doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going back home just as soon as she gets settled in good.” The family is actually dumping her and they do that because she is getting old. They do not want to take care of either Mrs. Otis or Mrs. Threadgood. Another example of ageism can be found on page 288. One day Evelyn Couch drives to go shopping, she has to wait a while for a parking space to open up. When a car finally leaves, a group of young girls take the empty spot. Evelyn said, “Excuse me, but I was waiting for that space and you pulled right in front of me.” The girl looked at her with a smirk and said, “Let’s face it, lady, I’m younger and faster than you
Write research based answers to the following questions - 40 to 90 words for EACH answer.
Ageism is any attitudes, actions, or institutional structure which subordinates a person or group because of their age or any assignment of roles in society purely on the basis of age. It typically reflects a prejudice in society against older adults. The concept of aging varies across different cultures as different countries have varying demographic statistics such as Japan and Italy having significant part of their population above the age of 60 versus most countries in Africa who have significant parts of their population below the age of 30. Most research on ageism is done on children, adolescents, or young adults with few studies on actual older adults. Age is increasingly becoming a more positive concept, yet older people are still stereotyped. The three theories in sociology about aging are disengagement, activity, and continuity.
From 1970 to the year 2000, the world's over-60 population is projected to increase by more than 90 percent" . This is an astonishing number, seeming how the total population was predicted to grow by less than 75 percent . "The most prominent feature of the looming shift in the composition of the working-age population is, of course, its increasing age" . It is hard to say what will happen when suddenly there will be an abundance of older people who are preparing to retire.
Kirstin, I enjoyed reading your thread. By the year 2030, there will be fewer working-age people supporting dependents then in the 1960’s, a 90 to 79 dependents person decrease even with an aging population increase (Schulz & Binstock, 2006). Although by 2030 there will be substantially less consumer’s then workers, the total supported burden is still higher for the baby boomers. The lack of the educational path and the number of baby boomers being born will be a much greater cost to support during retirement, then the younger age. With very low growth and healthcare projected to inflate, Medicare and Medicaid cost will begin to cost the government exponentially. Due to an improving and the Affordable Care Act, inflation is projected to increase to 5.7%, which is much higher the usual rate of below 4% that was in the 1960’s. With millions of baby boomers enrolling in Medicare, the healthcare will cause the GDP to rise from 17.2% to 19.3% by 2023 (McCarthy, M. (2014).
