Agriculture is a staple of every community, people have just lost sight of that. Smith and Park (2006) report, “In 1900, 41% of the American population was employed in agriculture, as compared to 1.9% of the population in 2002”. How have we become so far removed from the agricultural life that we believe the propaganda spread about it? Smith and Park (2006) explain why ignorance to agricultural life has thrived,
Agricultural literacy is an issue that has gained attention in recent years and is a subject of concern to those in the agriculture business. With fewer agricultural programs offered in schools, generations of young people are being raised with little knowledge of agriculture. As this cycle continues, lack of knowledge creates and perpetuates stereotypes concerning farming.
The disconnect between the urban public and rural communities has caused a lot of misunderstandings on how their food is produced. Balschweid, Thompson, and Cole (1998) state,
As general concerns rise over the way our food is produced, public impressions are tainted by the actions of special interest groups (Lichte & Birkenholz, 1993). As a result, many Americans elect and influence lawmakers to directly intervene in the practices used in producing our food and fiber (Hamlin,1962).
