Agriculture uses the domestication and cultivation of animals, plants, fungi and other life forms to produce food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal and other products to help sustain and enhance human life. Agriculture has existed for over the last 10,000 years and is credited into propelling our civilization into the modern cultures and technologies we see today. Without the ability to store and domesticate plants and animals it is unlikely that we would have been able to evolve beyond our hunting and gathering ancestors, advancing in both the arts and sciences. If the population continues to grow, so will our methods of production. Helping to save the planet is the ultimate goal, but in order to do so we will first need to save ourselves. Thomas Malthus was one of the first scientists to investigate the principles of population growth and the concept of carrying capacity. Malthus came to realize that the growth of a population relied upon, and was directly related to the amount of available resources needed to survive. Malthus acknowledged that if a population became too large, surpassing its carrying capacity, it would eventually be checked by what is known as a Malthusian catastrophe (i.e. famine and disease). We can induce this concept when observing a culture of bacteria, or more simply a pasture of farming sheep, first observed as the tragedy of the commons. Today we are already seeing symptoms of overpopulation, as a significant number of our population dies every day because of malnutrition, starvation and disease. So have we already surpassed our carrying capacity? Or are these issues of food security merely a result of affluent nations tipping the scale in their favor? Many people say that we have enough food to feed the current world population, so the issue then becomes how this food is distributed. Agriculture has long been the foundation of economy and society, especially during the time as early as in the Middle Ages. As the foundation of agriculture, corn production was the most important agricultural activity at the time.
The first reason of why agriculture is a better way of life, is because according to document 1 farmers were less violent. Hunters and gatherers on the other hand were in constant state of tribal warfare. This resulted in 25-30% of adult males dying from homicide. Warfare was necessary to keep population density low. This was due to the fact that a certain place only had so much food to support one person. Farmers on the other hand could use a small piece of land and plant crops that could support many people. They do not have to fight over food therefore less war and violence.
Agriculture is the main reason we have civilization today, for without food surplus people would spend their days finding food and water constantly. Native Americans started like all other people in the world, doing just that, until over time they turned food production into an art. I personally do not think that agriculture was the worst mistake in human history, but many of the negative results of it are still in existence. Some of the consequences that affected agriculturists during its early times have been resolved or neutralized. As the world population continues to rise, there are growing concerns for maintaining agricultural farmlands, especially in developing countries with drought and famine. This has also led to many shortages of food, due to high demand because of the increasing population. Demographists worry that if this growing issue continues to hurt food consumption of povertized countries, than there will be more deaths because the population is increasing, but the food levels are staying the same, or even decreasing. Some of these demographists believe that this is occurring, because the developed countries are intaking too much food. Others believe that this is because of the overpopulated countries, and the fact that they are in higher need for food because of their population. Another problem that arises within this is deforestation. Deforestation is a part of this growing problem because when massive woodlands are cut down, the lands become dry and bodies of water in or around the land dry up, making crops unsuitable for crop growth and crop rotation, leading to the lands to turn into non-arable lands. This is also known as desertification. This correlates with population growth because if lands become non-arable, then crops won’t grow there, leading to starvation in developing countries with higher population needs and demands. Although some people are taking action for the problems that this issue has given us, we’re still nowhere near solving the problem.

These behaviors and activities to cope are called resilience and Walker and Salt (2006) defined resilience as the ability of a system to absorb disturbance and still retain its basic function and structure. To reach to this resilience level, there is need for redesigning of the use of the natural resource base in a manner that will ensure its sustainability. One of the systems that depend on the use of natural resource base for its total thriving is the agricultural system. The extent to which an agricultural system is resilient depends solely upon the practices used to extract benefits from the system, that is, to improve productivity. It is therefore imperative to ensure that farmers employ sustainable practices, stakeholders put in measures that promote these sustainable practices and policies be developed that support the sustainable practices.
