WARNING: The following information may be hard to swallow. “The American Cancer Society predict[ed] 62,450 people w[ould] be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2015” (2). Though this amount is relatively small, patients can always find comfort and assistance in organizations such as the American Thyroid Association (ATA). “The ATA is the leading organization focused on thyroid biology and the prevention and treatment of thyroid disorders. Performed “through excellence and innovation in research, clinical care, education, and public health”, the ATA is making a difference. (“Research Accomplishments” 1). “The thyroid gland is located proximal to the throat, in front of the neck, under the thyroid cartilage”. The thyroid cartilage is also referred to as the “Adam’s Apple” (“Thyroid Cancer” 1). This “gland produces several important hormones”. These thyroid hormones control body temperature, weight, and energy level. Included in these hormones is “Calcitonin, which helps the body use calcium” (“Thyroid Cancer” 1). The stages of thyroid cancer can be determined using the “TNM” system. The TNM system is used to stage thyroid cancer, the T describing the primary size, the N indicating whether the cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes, and the M referring to “whether the cancer has metastasized” (spread to distant parts of the body).
