AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by a virus called HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus). This changes the body’s immune system, exposing individuals to infections and diseases. HIV / AIDS is the most threatening pandemic in the whole world. It is one of the infectious diseases that has claimed lives of many individuals all over. This has been propagated by its means of transmission from one individual to the other. For this reason, many organizations have come up to look for ways of controlling it. Among the organizations responsible is the World Health Organization (WHO) which has made efforts to control its spread.
HIV first was noticed in early 1980s. Over twenty years, it has been debated and argued for many years since then. The first heard of the case of AIDS was reported in the USA in early 1980s among gay members in the New York and California (Kalichman, 2013) though it is also said that it originated in west-central Arica in the early twentieth century. They started developing rare opportunistic infections that seemed to be resistance to any form of treatment that they were subjected to. At this time, this illness did not have a name. After a while, it was established that a virus known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus caused the infection. It was now clear that this virus was responsible for causing AIDS. Thereafter it was discovered, many of similar cases were reported all over the world since then.
