AIR POLLUTION
1. Introduction
1.1. Air Pollution Air pollution has been a major problem throughout world for the past 5 decades i.e. a few years after the industrial revolution. There are two types of air pollutions a) Natural and b) Anthropogenic, of which the natural causes (volcanoes, forest fires and tornadoes) are not in the control of man (Mosley 2010). Anthropogenic air pollution on the hand is a type of anomaly in the atmosphere where foreign objects are released into the air entirely by man and his activities (Industries, transport) and are controllable.
1.2. Industrial Revolution in Developed Countries Until the industrial revolution air pollution occurred only through natural causes and were of no great concern. However, industrial revolution which has made human power to dominate over the planet, has actually led man to dig his own grave. The western world has had as many as four industrial revolutions since 18th century also termed as “The Age of Smoke” (Kasa 2009). In the beginning the coal smoke was confined to a particular area but the concentrations of emissions increased as people began to migrate towards cities (Douglas et al. 2002). This led to continuous worsening of air quality and slow in decline public health conditions, but evidently, not enough to attract the attention of the lawmakers (Borja-aburto et al. 1996). Figure 1: Photochemical smogs in London (in 1952, (University of Edinburgh n.d.) and New Delhi (in 2015, Burke 2015a).
2. Air
The causes of air pollution are burning fossils fuels releases gases and chemicals into the air. Climate changes also increases the production of allergenic air pollutants including mold. ‘There are examples of air pollution such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and power our vehicles.’ “Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good indicator of how much fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted as a result.”(How Do We Cause Air Pollution)
Another big problem in polluting places and things is air pollution which can make air foggy, unbreathable, and toxic. According to “34 Facts about Pollution”, the text states breathing the air in Mumbai, India, for just one day is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. One of the things that can cause air pollution is releasing factory fuels and fossil fuels into the air. We also cause it from burning certain things like plastic, chemicals, and other
In today’s complex and interdependent earth systems, air pollution does not only affect human as a whole, but also the entire ecological systems that involves forests and wildlife (animals). Air pollution are caused
Since human’s activity, pollution becomes a big problem in the world. There are a lot of part of pollutions include water pollution, light pollution and air pollution. Air pollution is happened in our life. The United States is also a victim of air pollution. In 1943, Los Angeles photochemical smog event occurred. The whole of Los Angeles was covered with smoke. There are about 400 people died and a lot of fruits in orchards began to wither.
Air pollution is the contamination of air through different harmful gases, chemical, and smoke that makes plants, animals, and human lives harder to survive (Causes, Effects and Solutions of Air Pollution”). As Americans, our need for stuff increases and accumulates over time. We tend to throw away our old stuff to make room for new stuff. In the end, factories are producing more stuff leading to an increase in gas emissions into the air and water. Our society have seen from first-hand basis the dangers of air pollution, yet many turn a blind eye.
Although thought to be “not a big problem” and “under control” by most people, pollution is making its way in being a serious and an unforgiving threat to society. Pollution a topic everyone hears and knows exists. What they don’t know is how serious of a problem it is already becoming. Many health issues are being reported now that are linked to air pollution and even the most severe weather places have encountered are linked to air pollution also. By society, not fully being aware of the true threat that pollution is making, it will only become a growing threat that they will be encountering.
Since the Industrial Revolution in 1760, the effect of human activities has been amplified with the introduction of new technology and new energy sources. While pollution itself has no clear definition, several different types have been designated, including air, water, and sound. A painting by Frida Kahlo, an influential Mexican artist from the twentieth century, clearly portrays the difference between the United States and Mexico. In the background of the painting, smokestacks billowing from a factory are clear to see, demonstrating the dirtiness of the industrialized world (Kahlo). Air pollution today remains a very large problem in not only advanced countries, but in developing countries as well. Carbon emissions have escalated in the
Pollution was one of the major effects caused by the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Some places in England such as Manchester and Birmingham received nicknames such as "black country" because of the ridiculous amounts of soot and smog in the regions. These types of pollution were caused by giant factories operating and the consumption of coal.
In the late 18th century coal became a huge factor for the Industrial Revolution which caused smog to be a serious health hazard. "Ozone reacts chemically (“oxidizes”) with internal body tissues that it comes in contact with, such as those in the lung” (Water and Air). One of the top causes today of air pollution is motor vehicles. The heating of our atmosphere by the increase of greenhouse gases is known by global warming. "In 1952, pollutants from factories and home fireplaces mixed with air condensation killed at least 4,000 people in London over the course of several days" (Water and Air). Still today, many do not see this as a major health
In this research paper, i will focus on What is air pollution?, What is causing air pollution?,What is the current air quality condition? What are the effects of air pollution on United States. I will discuss what are the changes in the Earth’s climate and weather and the ways of prevention
In America, air pollution was an insidious problem that became so great that the government had to step in and create laws in order to regulate human activity involving pollutants. Humans generate air pollution through the combustion of fossil fuels and wood, driving a motorized vehicle, and industrial processes, such as the smelting of heavy metals. Most air pollution exists in urban areas where heavy industries prevail. The Industrial Revolution in the late twentieth century caused air pollution to greatly increase, and once citizens realized this was causing many consequences for their health, they began fighting for stricter regulations. The gradually improving air pollution problem shows that the legislation controlling
The Industrial Revolution became an entrance into a new world of great change. New innovations, theories and scientific breakthroughs were discovered and invented. The coal industry grew at such a However, it came at a price. The endless burning of coal –as it was the standard energy source- caused heavy toxic particles to waft in the atmosphere of Britain’s Industrial cities. Many other factors included infancy, diseases, water supply, and energy. Ultimately, the environmental changes in the Industrial Revolution were inevitable towards the experiences of the people of Great Britain.
Air, is one of the most substantial source to mankind and our planet. While it exists, so does everything else along. However, in today’s epidemic, there has been certain factors that have increased in understanding whether the air we breathe today is healthy or not? Is it doing more harm than we thought? In other words, the health risks against air pollution have risen in the past few decades; all from what you may ask? Well, it could be for various factors and evaluations; either environmental or materialistic. Pollution is a major public health crisis in the world. (Friis, 2012). This is one of the conflicts that contribute to various aspects of an individual’s life, whether they may realize it or not. In this paper will include the sources that cause pollution with the effects it cause as well as policies on the regulation of air pollution.
Air pollution can be dated back to early as the thirteenth century as King Edward I had threatened his people of london with large penalties for those who continued to burn sea-coal though this threat had little effect amongst the people of london it was one of the earliest concerns for the environment and if taken more seriously King Edward the first might have shaped a very different world than the one we know. King Edward the first would had to deal out massive punishment if he was around during the
Today we face a major threat: global warming. People polluting the air constantly get so blinded by their own greed that they do not tend to realize what they have created. Our society runs on fossil fuels as a source of power, and as we continue to abuse the use of nonrenewable resources, we harm the Earth’s climate. Humans have made the biggest contribution to global warming, and the dangers will only get worse if nothing gets done. Our various toxic activities, such as working at power plants, drilling up natural gases and oil, and deforestation all emit greenhouse gases into the air, and because of these omissions large bodies of ice and oceans, the wildlife, and people 's health will continue to get harmed extremely unless governments worldwide gets together and place a ban on greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2045.
