"If we could sniff or swallow something that would, for five or six hours each day, abolish our solitude as individuals, atone us with our fellows in a glowing exaltation of affection and make life in all its aspects seem not only worth living, but divinely beautiful and significant, and if this heavenly, world-transfiguring drug were of such a kind that we could wake up next morning with a clear head and an undamaged constitution - then, it seems to me, all our problems (and not merely the one small problem of discovering a novel pleasure) would be wholly solved and earth would become paradise."
In stories of all kinds, a common theme is “choices”. Choosing what to do with your life, choosing who you want to be with, choosing to defy stereotypes and doing things nobody would expect you to do. In our English course this year, we have read the story Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown and watched the film Into the Wild, both of which deal with important choices in life.
"Life is either a great adventure or nothing" (Keller). Helen Keller was a remarkable woman who at the young age of two -nearing three-, was stricken with an illness that left her blind and deaf. She then became a rather difficult child, throwing tantrums because she could not understand the growing world outside. Anne Sullivan, in 1887, became her teacher and helping her read Braille and learn symbols on her hand. Keller then went on to graduate college in 1904. What Keller means by this quote is that you cannot just go around and throw your life away. You have to make it worthwhile, whether you do that by meeting great people or doing great things.

This letter spoke about law and justice for racial inequalities, and in this letter, he was trying to convince the clergymen to act and stop racial inequalities. Towards the beginning of Kindred, when Rufus is a young boy, Rufus is very trusting of Dana, and in turn Dana is very willing to help and guide Rufus. At this point Rufus does not fully understand the concept of slavery, or black versus white. Rufus does see that black people are treated as below him, but he does not understand why nor does he take advantage of this, yet. Rufus simply sees Dana as a woman who dresses as a man who helps him when he is in desperate need of help. As a boy, Rufus is very trusting of Dana, as Dana is trusting of Rufus. As shown in, “Rufus grabbed my arm and held it, obviously trying not to cry. His voice was a husky whisper. ‘Don’t go Dana.’ I didn’t want to go. I liked the boy” (66). This quote takes place right
