The “average man” in today’s society does want to be free, but would rather be safe and give up freedom than be suffering. For example, the security at an airport takes away a part of a person’s freedom; however, passengers do not argue with the security because it makes them feel safe. Many people in today’s society strive for financial stability because that can help make them free. H.L. Mencken’s simple quote can have a dramatic impact on a person because it can make an individual rethink what he believes in. For an individual to be free, he is actually safe at the same time if he takes the right actions. When thinking about safety, consider a college graduate who will be seeking a job in a location near her hometown. The individual cannot find a well-paying job right away because she does not have enough experience in her field, so the graduate has a difficult decision to make. She can move back in with her parents or rent an apartment. By staying with her parents, she will save money until she receives a good job; however, at her parents’ house she has many restrictions she must follow. …show more content…

Many citizens find this wrong because it violates an individual’s freedom; however, what is the difference between this and airport security? In both circumstances an individual’s personal space and possession is being obstructed by the government. Both of these security technique are put in effect for citizens’ safety. People find that looking into personal information is a disturbance of privacy, but they find that airport security is different. However, airport security is violating privacy when the staff looks into bags for weapons and other substances. The airport security is used for safety and people go through it to keep their family safe.
