The Al-Anfal genocide ended late in 1988, at around the same time as Iraq's war with Iran. Since then, despite some of the long lasting effects such as reproductive problems thought to be caused by the chemical attacks inflicted upon it, the Kurdistan region of Iraq, currently has a population of about 5.2 million, made up of a combination of kurdish, Assyrian, Arab, Chaldean, Armenian and Turkish people.
In the past 150 years, tens of millions of men, women and children have lost their lives to ethnic cleansing or genocide. Although the definition is often scrutinized, according to Merriam Webster, "Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group". The most notable event associated with the term is the Holocaust. Stated by Judah Gribets, Edward Greenstein and Regina Stein, "nearly six million Jews fell victim to genocide during the years of the Holocaust". Of This number, one million were children who were unable to take care of themselves. People's hopes and dreams for the future were stripped from them, and many families were ripped apart. Many of these people were tortured or raped
The genocides of the 20th century which occurred in Rwanda and Germany had striking similarities, something that should have alerted the world to stop them. At the core of these two massacres, patterns existed that outlined how similar thinking and reasoning could lead to something as horrible as these two events. One can see how both groups used their command of knowledge as a way to control the people, how the rest of the world refused to step up to stop the killings, and how the people were thought of as less than humans to provide a just cause for such terrible acts.
The Darfur Genocide started on February 26, 2003. This genocide is still continuing till this day. Darfur Genocide is the mass slaughter of Darfuri men, women, and children in Sudan. This is happening because of the oppression of Darfur’s non-Arab population.. The people started to revolt and wanted the government to stop the oppressing of the non–Arab population. The government did not listen and got violent with the people. When the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) started to attack the government, the government responded with there own attack. The Sudanese government decided to use the Janjaweed a Sudanese military group to attack the non–Arab population. Now because of the Janjaweed millions of people
In 1991, a series of uprisings in Iraq turned into multiple rebellions in Northern and Southern Iraq started the “Kurdish War”. Millions of men, women and children were killed by the war. This was a genocide because this behavior resulted in torture devices, chemical
The political leaders of Armenia were targeted during the genocide, the loss of the Armenian leaders left the population vulnerable and made the rebuilding of Armenian even more difficult. This planned out tactic proves that the Armenian genocide was purposeful and thought out.
The events of World War I in the Ottoman Empire, where approximately two million Christian inhabitants were killed or disappeared traceless, are usually described as the 1915 genocide or the Armenian genocide since the Armenians constituted up to 1.5 million of these victims. The genocide practically emptied the Ottoman Empire and current Turkey from its Christian population, leaving an almost entirely Muslim/Turkish Turkey. Genocide is considered to have been intended as a solution to the Armenian Question, but also other minorities in the Ottoman Turkey, mainly Christian Assyrians/Syrians/Chaldeans and Greeks suffered as well.
In Mike Keefe’s cartoon he reveals the brutality of what happened it Sudan and how the UN could have done something to stop the massacre of the Sudanese people. Even after a horrific genocide occurred The UN were still slow to connect the dots of what happened. The genocide was “spelt” out right in front of the UN they still didn’t see what happened. They could have jumped in and prevented the killing from happening but instead did not come in till after the fact. The UN tried to ignore the fact of what was happening to avoid having to interfere with the ongoing genocide. Unless the killing is happening in their own back yard they are slow to react.
Long ago, two races ruled over the earth, Humans, and Monsters. One day war broke out between the two races, the humans were victorious, the monsters were sealed into the underground by the humans with powerful magic spells below Mt. Ebott. In the game Undertale, you are playing as a small child named ‘Frisk’ and is trying to get through the underground in two ways by killing all the monsters or Sparing all the monsters and bringing them to the surface. Undertale is a game with three ways to finish the game one by sparing all of the monsters two by killing only the main bosses and three by killing all of the monsters in the underground. The main bosses are Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, Sans,

Genocide is defined as "Article II: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group”(Stanton). In the past few years there have been mass killings in the Darfur region of South Sudan along with many rapes and rehoming of African people. The have been militia
Merriam-Webster defines a genocide as, “ the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group”, and the mass murder of the Tutsi in Rwanda fits this definition perfectly. From April to July of 1994 around 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered by the Hutus. This massacre was a genocide because a specific ethnic group was targeted.
Genocide is a very complex item to address. But to deeply and successfully address such a topic, it is a must to look deeper than the actions that have been displayed. But to understand the motives of genocide, one must know the correct definition of genocide. “Genocide,” a term used to describe violence against members of a national, ethnical, racial or religious group with the intent to destroy the entire group…” (What is...). Now fully understanding what genocide is, it will be easier to understand what motivates individuals in the past, present, and future to attempt genocide. A lot of questions have been made on what the motivation is of genocide. It is actually quite simple when thought about. The most common motivations are convenience, revenge, simple fear, and fear of pollution. Although there have been many different genocides in the world, it seems as if the motives in sequential order are convenience, revenge, fear of pollution, and simple fear. There are a large number of people who would like to say that mass genocides are okay. They would like to say that the killing of numerous amounts of people helps keep the world safe from over population and also helps keep people afraid of their superiors. Although using genocide as a solution is a very harsh choice of action, it has helped keep populations of races down, and has also shown civilians what the power of their government is. The purpose
Not only were the Yezidis in Iraq affected by the two Ottoman attempts at Yezidi genocide, but the Yezidi populations in Armenia and Syria were also targeted as the Ottomans sought to coalesce power and strengthen power through violent domination and oppression of subgroups within the Ottoman state (Fuccaro 1999; Golbasi 2008). Yezidis in Armenia have enjoyed relative peace and respect post- Ottoman decline. The community receives accommodations from the Armenian government including language instruction in Yezidi (distinct from Kurdish and Armenian), funding for a Yezidi national news paper, and Armenian public radio air time for Yezidi-language broadcasting programs (Yezidi National Union 2017).
Background: Genocide is a horrific event that must stopped and prevented around the world. With that, political leaders that played roles in the genocide must be prosecuted and given necessary punishment. The convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of punishment defined genocide as an act committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. One of the biggest and most known genocide would the Jewish Holocaust during World War II, where more than 11 million innocent people lost their lives under the Nazis regime. Other genocides have occurred after the Holocaust, such as the Rwandan Genocide and the genocide in Darfur (Still occurring). Genocides can include mass murder, acts of terrorism, Physical or mental abuse, exclusion from certain rights, or
Genocide, a dire event, has been recurring time and time again throughout history. In the past, there was the Holocaust, where Hitler exterminated over six million Jews based on his anti-semitic views. Elie Wiesel, a Jewish author, has become a very influential man in educating the world of the true events of the Holocaust due to his involvement in the disaster. Presently, a genocide is occurring in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, in which according to Cheryl Goldmark, “a systematic slaughter of non-Arab residents at the the hands of Arab militiamen called Janjaweed” has been taking place since 2003. (1) Not only is genocide a tragic historical event, it also continuously occurs today.
