Imagine having little or no pigment in your eyes, skin, and hair. You’re constantly putting on sunscreen and covering up your skin because you are worried you will develop skin cancer down the road. No matter what doctors can do, you will never have 20/20 vision. This is what it is like if you have Albinism. Albinism is a genetic disorder children can inherit from their parents. First of all, people with Albinism have little or no pigment in their hair, eyes, and skin. With no pigment comes lack of color eyes, skin, and hair so they have light skin and hair. Albinism is a recessive trait so both parents have to give the child the Albinism gene. Secondly, Albinism is caused when a child inherits one defective gene, which is responsible for producing Melanin, from each parent. Melanin is responsible for absorbing ultraviolet rays so the skin isn’t damaged. Thirdly, Albinism has many negative symptoms. People with Albinism don’t tan when exposed to sun and easily get sunburns. They have a greater risk for skin cancer than people without Albinism. First of all, there are two different forms of Albinism and it isn’t easy to tell for sure. Sometimes it is possible to tell if a child has Albinism before he or she is born, at five-week pregnancy. Two tests are available: hairbulb pigment and tryrosinase. Secondly, it’s extremely sad but there is not cure for Albinism. Doctors can prescribe glasses to help vision problems but they can’t give a person with Albinism 20/20 vision. Tinted lenses can be prescribes too ease pain. Thirdly, a person with Albinism has to be cautious around sunlight. Too much exposure to sunlight may lead to skin cancer in the future.
