A role model is an irreplaceable person who often has a following of people who attempt to emulate their actions and reactions. They often are in places of authority or, rather, noble in the eyes of their attendants. Role models yield a lot of value in many societies proven through literature in “The Color of Water” by James McBride, observations of mentors both in history and the present, and my personal experience with leaders who I appreciate.

It is really hard to be a role model but Lupe from the short story Marble champ by Gary Soto is a great role model because she is a good sport,a hard worker, and above all, an intelligent person.

They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.

Mark Wasilko is a 62 year old LED test fixture designer who lives in San Jose. He went to several schools after high school, including trade schools and community colleges. He has one child, and works full-time at Lumileds, which is in San Jose. He was the first person in his family to ever attend post-secondary education, but he didn’t go to a four-year college. During his post-secondary education, he went to several community colleges and trade schools, including West Valley and De Anza colleges, to study multiple fields. I asked him for some experiences from that time, but he replied saying, wearily, “I don’t remember, this all took place decades ago.” In the period of American history in which he was raised, a degree wasn’t needed to succeed

The idea of a hero has always been something of great importance to my upbringing. Although my biggest role models are my parents, they always stressed the idea of having positive role models and people to emulate and look up too, whether it be a coach who shows me the importance of leadership and team building, or a teacher who shows me the importance of remaining focused and the importance of education.
