Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, was a man with many titles and accomplishments. Some of his titles include: inventor, scientist, and teacher. While pursuing teaching, Bell began to research methods of transmitting several telegraph messages over a wire, which would ultimately lead to Bell’s invention of the telephone. This research was intended to help the deaf learn to speak through sound waves.

In 1874, the idea of creating a device to transmit speech through an electrical current formed in Bell’s mind. He spent much time experimenting and designing a device that fit the image expanding within the confines his head. Two years later he applied for a patent, which was granted on March 7, 1876.
