Alexander the Great, the king of Macedon, the man who united Greece, conquered the Persian empire, and became one of the greatest military generals to ever live. Should his acts of greatness lead him to be considered a hero? People looked up to him as though he was a hero. Alexander the Great stands as a hero because he served as king and a protector of Macedon for 13 years, he always made sure his kingdom was safe no matter what, and he served as an important hero on the battlefield.

Alexander the Great was the King of Macedonia. He is considered one of the greatest military geniuses of all times. He inspired later conquerors such as Hannibal the Carthaginian, the Romans Pompey, Caesar, and Napoleon. Alexander was born in 356 B.C. in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia. Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia, conqueror of the Persian Empire, and one of the greatest military geniuses of all times. Even at an early age, Alexander had the promise to become a great leader. Through all his victories and conquests, he has become a great hero and has had a large impact on history. That is why I chose he book Alexander the Great, by J.R. Hamilton for my review. Hamilton does a very good job with the story of Alexander the Great.

Alexander the Great was the son of Phillip II, which was the king of Macedon and was a successful king and leader, setting up his son to be a successful leader in both the military aspect, as well in the political aspect as a king (Mark). In 331 B.C., Alexander attacked Mesopotamia and decisively defeated Darius III, who escaped the field of battle. Students usually learn about Alexander sometime in high school but he is often referred to as Alexander the Great in education. Was he really all that “great” though? This is the question that many students and educators are beginning to ask themselves. Often remembered for shaping the course of history during the Hellenistic Era due to all of his extraordinary achievements, Alexander the Great truly earned his title of being the Great. Some examples of why Alexander the Great earned his name would be his dedication to the Kingdom of Macedon, his military strategies and preparedness, and his conquering and foundings of land and famous cities. While “great” may seem like a fairly common word, it should be used carefully and only in cases where it is deserved. Think about the different meanings of the word “great” and make connections with some of the accomplishment that Alexander the Great was able to achieve in order to see the true greatness Alexander possessed and the greatness that lives on in his legacy.
