Alexandra Robbins is an author who writes about teenagers, college students, and recent grads. She also speaks at schools about cliques, popularity, and bullying. Some people may disagree with Alexandra Robbins opinion about the "conventional notions" of popularity. I agree that popularity does not define social success. I know people who were not popular in high school and are successful now, and her quirk theory also states that being popular does not define social success.
I know people who were not popular in high school and are successful now. My youth group leader Morgan Smith was not popular in high school, he hung out with the uncool crowd. He is short, he is under five feet tall, in high school he was bullied because he was short, and now he has a great testimony. Alexander Robbins used the example of Bruce Springsteen, when Bruce was in high school he was unpopular that he felt invisible, so he started a band, so he could stand out.

In the short story, Popularity, by Adam Bagdasarian, the narrator yearns to be popular. As the school year goes by the narrator immensely looks up to the popular kids wanting and wanting to be one of them. One day the narrator decided to go up to the popular boys to try and get into their circle. When the narrator arrives he couldn't get noticed. The next day he tried again and was able to get noticed by making a joke that caused everyone to laugh. Soon, the narrator became on of the popular kids. After a while the narrator realizes being popular isn't all that great. Because of this event, the he changes. The narrator is the dynamic character who started off thinking that being popular was so cool. At the end one the narrator was popular he
Popularity is one of the most commonly studied peer interaction phenomenon. Initially these studies assigned participants to one of the following standard sociometric categories: popular, rejected, neglected, average, and controversial. These studies faded away for two main reasons. The first is that this model neglected to take the school structure into consideration when studying popularity. It ignored that due to the transition between classes starting in middle school students no longer have a small and stable social component that social interactions and sociometric status could be based on. The second is that popularity depends on the adolescents’ perception of popularity rather than how well liked an adolescent is. Popularity heavily depends on the
Popularity in the book Jake Reinvented is how different characters act to get all the things they want including friends. One plot event is at a party. Millions of dollars in their pockets could be a dangerous idea. They may not be able to withstand the pressures of professional sports and spend all their money on drugs and alcohol. What they do not understand is that once they are in that spotlight, there is no turning back. Young athletes are exciting to see in professional sports, but it makes you think of what they actually went through and handle in everyday life as a teenager. In addition, Isamu Bae says ?Professional scouts must attempt to decipher the maturity level of players, and for athletes in their teens, it is nearly impossible to figure out.? Growing up, the time a child would have playing with his friends or going to the movies, would not be there like for any normal kid. They made the sacrifice to play sports rather than have a social life and be a regular kid.
To most kids in high school, social status and physical appearance are everything. A kid doesn’t necessarily have to be the most attractive person in the school to be considered popular, but sadly it seems to help amongst the more superficially minded teenagers. The jocks are seen as the “top dogs” of the school, due to their athletic physique and luck when it comes to dating. Cheerleaders are considered “the perfect, most beautiful” girls in the entire school, and some of them believe that makes them better than everyone else. I was viewed as a loser when I first moved to Plano, Texas. I had a chili bowl haircut, large glasses, and a thick west Texas accent. I also had a lot of friends who enjoyed playing video games and daydreaming about
Education lasts a lifetime but sports lasts only for a certain amount of time. Most physical sports are played when their young but they can’t always play forever except some sports. According to the gator an article “why college athlete should not get paid” the author states that “Despite earning a seven-figure salary in the NFL, Matt Elam returned to Gainesville during the offseason to continue his degree. He even took a low-paying job at a sporting goods store to get a better grasp on the business he wants to pursue following his NFL career.” What this author says is that knowledge you could always keep in your brain versus a sports career it always that will last a short period of time. In the American tradition education means a lot too many families because it’s it gives success. There
The book The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth is a book that everyone should read at one point or be taught from in school. It explains school cliques, high school emotions, popularity, and outcast life. The author, Alexandra Robbins, studied many years, about a decade, for this novel to come to life. Throughout her words, she explains that outcasts, whether they are nerds, punks, losers, loners, “tree huggers,” math geeks, band members, etc, are the future of our world. I agree with her when she says that the qualities that people exclude for in school help individuals exceed in life.
(Ackerman, V., & Scott, L. (2016, March 29).) Athletes are exposed to incredible resources in college that other students do not receive without having to pay. Most athletes can get a tutor for little charge to keep them eligible and also receive full access to health professions to keep them healthy to pay. About 67% of athletes graduate with their degree and also throw into athletes that enter professional sports leagues, they are often better off after college than non athlete students. (Ackerman, V., & Scott, L. (2016, March 29).)
When they were in college they never had time to get a job, because they were spending their time doing either school work or practicing/playing the . Also if the athlete is good enough to make it into professionals they will have to manage more money. Tiffany Patterson stated, “One aspect I find lacking in this topic discussion is the ignoring of the very real fact that a lot of athletes are very financially irresponsible.”.
But if they were paid for the sport athletes play then some of them will consider staying and playing college athletics. Athletes will stay and receive their degrees more, so graduation rates will increase in college and athletes will have a back up plan if they do not make it into the
Douglas said, “the truth is, athletics takes up so much time and energy that there is little left for work”. College Athletes are occupied with their activities like other regular students maybe even more but still can not have extra money coming in like any other student on campus.
Some athletes put more time in sports than college, and do so without any pay. In fact the author states that “Academic work for some athletes is secondary: top men’s basketball and football players spend 40 hours per week on their sports, easily. During
They have to take the time out of their day every day to be involved in their sport, whether it is practice, weight lifting, or games. They need study time outside of practice so they can succeed in their classes. If they were to get a job, it would cut out of their everyday study time which would more than likely cause them to get bad grades in their class and keep them from playing their sport. Let’s say a student athlete gets a job, but they have to work late at night because a normal college athlete will condition or weight lift in the morning then go to class until about three or four pm, has practice, and sometimes a mandatory study hall. The athlete would go through the next day exhausted because they are up late at night working to make money so that they can provide for themselves. If these student athletes were to make money from their performance, other than scholarship money, they would have more time to study and be provided
All the expenses that they have to acquire overwhelm many students that attend college. When this occurs, they tend to dropout, or struggle with taking on college courses and working. What is so amazing is that high school athletes think that is they attend college for a year or two, they can go on and make a career on a professional level. They do not understand that if they do go professional, it will not always last. They will eventually have to go to college anyway. So, why not go ahead, get a good education, and have a successful career.
