This can cause problems during the child’s years in school. It is often characterized by as having a below average intellectual functioning level as well as below average adaptational skills. The causes of most learning disabilities are for the most part unknown. However, there are quite a few factors that can contribute to the development of these disabilities. Some of these few known factors include being hereditarily passed down as well as certain changes and alterations in the developmental process of the embryo including Down ’s syndrome. Another influence is the introduction and exposure of toxic substances during pregnancy including alcohol or infection during pregnancy. Other factors that can play a part occur during the birthing process. These include any kind stress or injury that can occur, especially to the brain (healthy children, 2013). Some of these include but are not limited to any sort of confusion in any new experiences or encounters, and children often display shorter attention spans. Often times they display limited skills in communicating with others (Siskin). The IQ categorization for the severity of the learning disabilities is broken up into four parts, with each categorization increasing in the severity of the symptoms presented. The first is Mild which is represented at levels between 50 and 70. The second is Moderate being represented at 35-55. The next is Severe at 20-40. The final categorization is Profound at levels 20 and below

Students with learning disabilities are a diverse group of individuals, exhibiting difficulties in many different areas. The areas most affected are reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and math; however, Learning Disabilities are specific to the individual. It is essential for educators to understand all of the possible characteristics that may be seen in children with LD. By knowing what to look for, educators may be able to help provide a meaningful educational experience. The most common types of Learning Disabilities are those that impact reading, writing, and math. According to “Specific Learning Disabilities,” there are five core concepts to consider when defining LD. First, Learning Disabilities are a heterogeneous group; LD comes in all shapes and sizes. Second, LD results in a significant difficulty to listen, speak, read, write, reason, and perform math. Third, Learning Disabilities are unique to the individual. LD is said to start in the central nervous system, and does not disappear over time, but can take on many different stages over a child’s life. Fourth, LD can occur simultaneously with other disabilities; that would not otherwise be classified as a disability. Some examples include ADHD, sensory aversions, or emotional disturbance. Lastly, LD is not caused by external influences. People from different cultural backgrounds may also have a Learning Disability (Kirkland, 2012). As an educator, I need to make sure I understand all of the possible characteristics that may be seen in children with LD. Learning disabilities is “a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical handicap.” on average children with learning disabilities start to show sings at age 5 however sometimes they develop later and go unnoticed, for the students who are diagnosed with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia- Difficulty reading, Dyspraxia (Sensory Integration Disorder)- Difficulty with fine motor skills, Dyscalculia- Difficulty with math, Dysgraphia- Difficulty with writing. The school systems have programs to help those children have an easier time in school. Programs like RTI “ Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs.” RTI is designed to make a individual special education plans for students.

The purpose of this paper is to define, diagnose, and explore different treatment methods for children with learning disabilities. By considering various empirical studies conducted by researchers, the neurologically based processing disorder will be explored. Children diagnosed with learning disabilities can achieve academic success when they receive overall support from medical professionals, educators, parents, and society. Quite simply, children learn in different ways despite factors associated with their level of intelligence. A review of these significant research studies will substantiate that academic and personal achievements are achievable with the appropriate classification and recommended treatments.
Only ten years ago, many people didn’t know there were such things as Attention Deficit Disorder or Dyslexia, and, if they did, they didn’t believe they were to be taken seriously. Learning disabilities are becoming more and more common in children and adults. Currently statistics indicate that: 2.4 million students are diagnosed with learning disabilities, with as many as 1 out of every 5 people in the United States having a learning disability and almost 1 million young people (ages 6 through 21) having some form of a learning disability and receiving special education in school. And, though none of these disabilities are threating, they are most definitely life changing.
It is vital to deliberate what constitutes as a learning disability. But also essential to understand that it is not just one disability. The medical literature defines it as a learning disability is a neurological disorder (LD online (2010).Mencap however state that it can be recognised as a reduced intellectual ability to cope in everyday situations (mencap 2014) Types of learning disabilities include: downs syndrome and a range of other impairments. This definition is further extended by Holland who states that internationally criteria is. These are: intellectual impairment (IQ) social or adaptive dysfunction combined with IQ
The first component is working memory and recall, holding facts in mind while manipulating information; accessig facts stored in long-term memory. The second component is activation, arousal and effort. This means they have trouble getting started on things, paying attention is difficult as well a s finishing work. The third is emotional control, the ability to tolerate frustration and thinking before acting or speaking. The fourth is internalizing language, using “self-talk” to control one's behavior and direct future actions. The fifth is complex problem solving, taking an issue apart, analyzing the pieces, reconstituting and organizing it into new ideas. Most Children with a learning disability have a poor working memory and recall. They have a limited working memory capacity, a very weak short-term memory and forgetfulness. As a result, students struggle to follow instructions and have difficulty performing mental computation such as math in one’s head. It affects some students in their sense of events from the past, they have difficulty recalling the past. They do not learn easily from past behavior and often repeat misbehavior. This also affects their sense of time causing them to have difficulty holding events in mind and also make it difficult to prepare for upcoming events. As a result, students have difficulty judging the passage of time accurately and so not accurately estimate how much time it will take to finish a task. These students do not allow enough time to complete work. It affects their sense of self-awareness, as a result students do not easily examine or change their own behavior. It affects their sense of the future, students live in the present and focus on here and now. They don’t talk about time or plan for the future, as a result they have difficulty projecting lessons learned in the past and struggle preparing for the future. Many students with
1) Before I watched this video there was a few things I already knew about learning disabilities. Through the many science and health related classes that I took through high school, I already knew that genetics has a role in learning disabilities as well as other factors. As a result of these classes I also knew that some medications can actually help children with disabilities. In elementary school I had difficulty with math and had to have tutoring and so I knew from experience that there are programs such as special teachers and tutoring that can help people with learning disabilities. In high school I helped tutor a lot of learning disabled kids and so I knew that not every disabled child is the same. Though tutoring, I also knew that not all people with learning disabilities have the same effect on learning.
A learning disability or disorder is a term used for various learning complications. Individuals who have to cope with a learning disability are not dumb or lazy, in fact, they are just as smart, or in some cases, smarter, than individuals without any disability. The only different thing between the two is that an individual with a disability has their brain wired somewhat different and this affects the way they receive and process information. This means that they see, hear, and understand things in a different way. This leads to trouble while learning new information and putting it to practice. Reading, writing, math, speaking, listening, and reasoning are the areas that are most affected by these learning
Individuals with learning disabilities are all unique. A learning disability, to me, is a condition that changes the way an individual learns and impacts how they are able to express the knowledge they have learned. Learning disabilities are separate from physical limitations because, according to IDEA ‘04, learning disabilities impact an individual’s ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations. An individual with a learning disability most often does not appear at the surface to look different from their peers, but they require additional supports, strategies and instruction in order to be a successful student. I believe their brain is hardwired to learn differently from the “typical” student, and it is my job, as the special education teacher, to find out how the student learns best and provide them with the tools they need.
Students with learning disabilities (LD) are the largest groups of students with exceptionalities in the classroom today (“Fast Facts,’ 2013). LD students have held this ranking since the 1980’s. The numbers for the next leading group of exceptional students in the classroom (speech/language impaired students) are almost half that of LD students (“Fast Facts,’ 2013). Students with learning disabilities may not seem that different from their neurotypical peers. They may have trouble learning in some academic areas, even when provided highly effective instruction, but do fine in others (Fuchs, Fuchs, Mathes, Lipsey, and Roberts, 2002). The unevenness in their academic development is a main characteristic for LD students (Torgesen, 2002). Other typical characteristics that might be found include low achievement rates, easily distracted, lack of social skills, lack of motivation, and difficulty with information-processing (Rosenberg, 2011, p. 142).
