Alice In Wonderland Schizophrenia Analysis

When watching, “Alice in Wonderland” as a child of course I didn’t know what Schizophrenia was, therefore I didn’t recognize or look for this in the character of Alice. After doing research and re-watching the film, it became clearer to me that Alice does in fact show symptoms of Schizophrenia. What exactly is schizophrenia? As stated in the class lecture slides, it is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the brain that is expressed in abnormal mental functions and disturbed behavior. Some of the symptoms include; hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, slow thinking, disorganized speech, significant impairment in functioning, etc. In this essay, I will be discussing Schizophrenia in Alice’s character, hence the fact I will be describing her symptoms, causes, outcomes, etc. There are many different factors that play a role in the disorder of Schizophrenia. At the beginning of the movie, “Alice in Wonderland” we find out that Alice’s father has passed away. With this being said, this could have been an environmental factor that played a role in Alice’s coming of Schizophrenia. As talked about in lecture, personal tragedies experienced by families are one of these environmental factors and fits into what happened with Alice and her family.
Alice has been having continuous nightmares that consist of the same activity; falling into a rabbit hole. After doing research, I found that this is a part of another disorder; Dream Anxiety Disorder (DAD). DAD is the reoccurring nightmares
