Reducing Stigma in Mental Health Conditions
Background on Mental Health Mental Health is often used as a representation of mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia, and others. According to the World Health Organization (2016), mental health is a state of well-being wherein an individual has the capacity to realize his or her own potential, can manage with the normal stresses of life, can work efficiently and successfully, and is able to render something to his or her community. Positive mental health also copes with the stresses of life. They are capable of handling hard situations and are able to balance life because they are contented of the things that they have. Mental health should also be viewed as important as physical health. There is no evidence that will alert you that your mental health is suffering but sometimes mental health problems often manifest physical symptoms. If you don’t pay attention to your mental and emotional needs, your quality of life suffers; your work suffers; your relationships suffer; your physical health suffers. The absence of diagnosable mental health problems does not simply implies good mental health, sometimes it is best that we also acknowledge to make ourselves free from the things that keeps us near to any indicators of mental health problems. It is important to remind ourselves that mental illness and mental health are not stationary it means they can change over time depending on the factors. Some of the factors that affect mental health are: stress in the workplace; lifestyle and health; exposure to trauma; and genetics. An individual’s mental health will be negatively affected if it cannot comprehend to the demands of its environment and exceeds its coping abilities.
