An idea central to the whole story is alienation. Alienation by choice, alienation by need and alienation by circumstance are just a few examples that are depicted in the movie. Most forms of alienation are passively revealed during the course of the entire movie. The movie begins with the protagonist's wife and family fleeing to Miami from their home country of Cuba, owing to political turmoil. The central character, a writer, stays back by choice hoping to finally finish writing a book. It is this alienated circumstance that he tries to use to fuel his creative energies. He is depicted living in a penthouse in a high-rise building. He gazes at he street through his telescope and is thus portrayed as being reclusive and unaffected.
