In this film “It’s All About Me”, they talk about how the generations over time have changed dramatically. The generation before X, Y, and Z, the baby boomers, were people who worked before anything else in life. They were extremely hard working and respected their parents, elders, and authorities. Even though this generation grew up in a normal household with parents that interacted with their daily lives, as time went on, things began to change. Generation Y became tech savvy with all the new technology being brought into the world. Being exposed to new technology like computers, televisions, phones, etc. changed everything. Gen Y cared about being up to date with things. They wanted to be up to date with not only technology, but also with the latest trends and fashion. Gen Y most likely lived in split homes because of divorced parents. They also tend to rely on parents for things like money and parents tend to try and buy their love. Generation Z is extremely tech savvy. With the latest technology like the iPhone, laptops, tablets, etc. they’ve been able to stay in contact and up to date with everything through social media like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. This generation hadn’t been born in a world where they have to work for everything (in most cases). Generation X and Y also did not have to work as much as the baby boomer generation but gen Z will never have to experience anything that the previous generations had to experience. Baby Boomers are self-assured, and independent. They also have a strong work ethic and aren’t afraid of hard work. They prefer structure, a right path of learning to reach their goals. Baby boomers aren’t afraid to put in a hard day of work when it is due. Baby boomers aren’t familiarized with technology. They appreciate a good challenge, and accept a mission to increase their knowledge and push them past their limits. Unlike Baby Boomers, Generation X is familiarized with technology and incorporates it when necessary. Generation X tends to entrepreneurial thinkers and reality driven, and their mentality is will lecture assist them in the real world. These two groups come from a different background and the way they view behavior.
The compare and contrast of these two generations; X is merely based on feedback and how the information is received and how the criticism can be used to accomplish goals and advancement opportunities. In regards to generation Y; prefers regulation via social networking websites to sustain firm information being provided to them. The issue in this generation is the multi function capability of basic mediation without higher authority assistance. Technology for the veterans and baby boomers is just a laughing situation to most, my views are they do appreciate change, they have traits of a human with autism; someone who accustom to routine.
This generational gap was what altered the development of real learning, for it allowed Generation Me children to assume that hard work was not needed to succeed and to learn. Due to the different mindset that was developed through the gap, self-esteem was not lacking in GenMe. So, it is understandable why Boomers felt that an individual should be more important than society. They had to go through life fighting for what they believed in, causing what Tannen calls the “human spirit” to take the blow (Tannen, 419). She states, “contentious public discourse becomes a model for behavior and sets the tone for how individuals experience their relationship to others and the society we live in” (Tannen, 419). Baby Boomers did not have self-esteem so they enforced it on their children, keeping them from ever feeling that way. The cause of them feeling this way is that “the human brain is almost infinitely malleable” (Carr, 70). That malleability was used by Baby Boomer parents in order for them to set a sense of self-esteem and individualism in their children. This alteration of their children’s minds was Boomer parents’ first mistake, for it did not allow children to discover their own worth. Rather, it supplied them with false encouragement, and prevented the possibility of engaging themselves in a society where everyone works together and is confident, but not individualistic.
The generation Y group was born between 1982 and 2000 (Huggins, 2008). This generation grew up with the internet, and relies heavily on instant communications through use of cell phones, text messages and social networking sites (Huggins, 2008). Their communication style is instant using technology all the time, and much less formal than previous generations.
Every generation is influenced by its period 's economic, political and social events. From the Great Depression to the civil rights and women 's movements to the advent of television and advanced computer technologies. Thus generational background/situation may also affect the way they work. The key is to be able to effectively address and take advantage of the differences in values and expectations of each generation in the workplace. The current work place consists of four different generations; The Baby Boomers (1946-1964) who are slowly retiring and existing the workforce, The Generation X (1965-1976), The Generation Y or millennia (1977-1997), and the Generation Z who are about to or are just entering the work force. Although these different generations tend to want similar things in a workplace their environment/background has shaped their character, values, and expectations (Hahn 2011).
A generation can be defined as the period, cohort or age of a group of people. Age is seen as the age that the persons were when particular transitions or events in life take place. Period can be defined as the overall experience of a person’s lifetime. Lastly, cohort can be seen as the overall grouping of people who have shared events during their formative years that more than likely contribute to like-minded behavior throughout the duration of their lives. There are currently four generations in United States society: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and The Millennials. The silent generation was born between the years of 1930 and 1945. Significant events during this time period include but are not limited to World War II and the Great Depression. The baby boomer generation was born between the years of 1946 and 1964. Significant events for this generation include the substantial growth of the middle class as well as economic prosperity. Generation X is born in the time period of 1965-1979, this generation was brought together by the big energy issue as well as the Vietnam War. Lastly the final generation that is currently in the workforce are the Millennials. This generation was born between the years 1980 and 2001, this group is brought together by the 9/11 terrorist attacks as well as the internet
Who is Generation Y? According to business dictionary, Generation Y is the generation of people born during the 1980s and 1990s. Growing in an era where technology changes constantly has made Generation Y more technologically savvy and prone to using media in everyday life. It has also made some people not realize what it was like in the past because Generation Y has seen the technology grow so much in their lifetime. Generation Y has had access to growing and changing technology, such as the internet and video games. Harrison states that Generation Y have been immersed in and surrounded by technology, from television and playing Snake on a Nokia 3210 to World of Warcraft and iPhones there is no escape form electrical devices in the modern world. Generation X faces many issues unique to their generation, technology was advancing, and computer were becoming more affordable and widespread. They faced both social and ecological issues, with advances in medicine that caused the generation before them to live longer, and being the one of the first generations to be effected by student loan debt. Generation Xers are often known for their high level of skepticism and their “what do I get out of this” attitudes. They are considered to be the first generation of “latchkey” kids, or kids without much boundaries. During the 60’s and 70’s divorce rates were at an all-time high, so many of the children of this generation were exposed to large amounts of divorce (Schroer). Which might explain for the high levels of skepticism and freedom they had. It seemed they also didn’t care much for politics sense they had the lowest voting participant rate of any other generation.
To begin with, let me tell you a little bit about my generation. We are the generations that zd6was born between the late 1970s and the mid-1990s. The “Gen Y” has we are call, was raise by the “baby boomers” our parents’ generation.
GEN Y ( Also called as Millenials):Millennial have grown up with technology and are comfortable with change. They value skill development and enjoy the challenge of new opportunities. Millennial are able to multi task, they want the flexibility to work where and when they want so that they can pursue their outside interests.
He says that while Gen Z can take in a lot of information very quickly due to this technological upbringing they also lose interest extremely quickly. Also, they tend to be more private with this technology than millennials were, rather than posting everything online they are more likely to use more anonymous apps.

Technology is not all to blame for the stereotypes about Generation Z. Despite the negative comments about Generation Z being lazy and unaware, they are not at all. In fact, because most of them are technologically inclined and virtually updated, they are not apathetic, they’re just being teenagers who were raised in a different environment. This is why there is such a thing as generations in this world. If there weren’t any changes in the world, we wouldn’t even be able to tell if a new generation has come. Every generation has its benefits for a better and more advanced living.
In any generation, from the Greatest Generation to Generation Alpha, you have your outdoorsy people, your video gamers, your pushovers, your leaders, your cooks and the people who can’t even make microwave popcorn. While certain things are supposed to affect a generation’s behavior, some will affect certain people and other’s won’t. Just like we all have a different code of DNA, different fingerprints or hairs on our heads, our personalities also differ. Maybe some people from Generation Z will fall apart without their devices, but others could care less about modern technology. One cannot address a generation and using the traits given to the age group, decide their capability in different scenarios. One thing that can be done, is understanding that everyone was made to have different skills for the exact purpose of being the yin to someone’s yang. To fill the empty spaces others cannot. Whether any group of people is thought of as deadbeats or not, humans were made to succeed. I choose to believe that we are all capable of surviving with a group of other people and Generation Z is included in that.
