An author’s writing style expresses a different view to their story. Many authors vary in their writing style is shown in the story My First Free Summer, the poem Exile, the poem All American Girl and the short story Antojos. Alvarez’s writing style consists of many factors because she uses imagery, figurative language, and point of view to convey a theme.
Throughout her stories Alvarez uses different points of view to show her emotions. In My First Free Summer the author talks about how her first summer with school, “Day after Day, I kicked a deflated beach ball around the empty yard, feeling as if I’d been tricked into good behavior,” (248). This sentence is talking about how up until that summer, she had always been jealous of having a free summer. This important because she is convey her jealousy towards the past summers and her rage towards being alone. On the other hand in Antojos she describes her surroundings “Yolanda came upon a small village- ALTAMIRA in rippling letters on the congregated tin roof of the first little house.” (260). In All American Girl, Alvarez expresses her definition of a native in America, “I wanted stockings make up, store bought clothes; I wanted to look like an american girl,” (Line 1-2). This is saying that she wants to fit in and be normal because she is unhappy with her life. This important because these show Alvarez is very straight-forward when she writs, not beating around the bush. On this subject, in Exile, the author provides her feelings of when they just found out about their escape, “My sisters crying when we turned before the family beach house,” (Line 30-31) . This is showing the emotion of the car ride to the terminal. This is vital to expose the author’s writing style because she is very serious about her writing especially on the theme of immigration. Even though imagery is conveyed in her writing, it isn’t enough to deduce her writing
To begin, “AmeRican,” by Tato Laviera illustrates a hopeful attitude about the Latin customs that have a place in American culture/society. This poem can be interpreted as a celebration of the Latin presence in New York City, and the poet expresses how Latin people is creating a new generation in the United States. Moreover, the way of how Latin people is living and feeling safe into the United States is changing every day. As the narrator of “AmeRican” mentions “Across forth and across back,” (line 20) The narrator wants to demonstrate that he can be free in the city without the necessity of hiding just because he is from a Hispanic background; and that they can express themselves however they want. Indeed, the city is so diverse and many
Since the beginning of time, people have immigrated from their home country to all over the world. Immigration has been influenced by many factors in society like war, lack of resources, and tyrannical government. The United States has been the hotspot for centuries and has been named the “Mixing Pot” by many. This novel shows how immigration plays a big part in shaping the people’s lives and how it affects them personally. In How the Garca Girls Lost Their Accents, Alvarez uses an autobiographical character managing two cultures at the time of Trujillo’s dictatorship to dive into the complexities of self-image, gender roles, and the challenges of assimilation.
First of all, the setting of this novel contributes to the Rivera family’s overall perception of what it means to be an American. To start this off, the author chooses a small American city where groups of Latino immigrants with their own language and traditions, lived together in the same apartment building. All these immigrants experienced similar problems since they moved from their countries. For example, in the novel after every other chapter the author
The way the writer communicates is through their style. It appeals to the audiences emotions, it can make the message more artistic and memorable.

The poem I have deconstructed is, “How to be a Real Indian” by Kenzie Allen. “How to be a Real Indian” consists of two stanzas. The poem is in a first person point of view. This poem was deconstructed in order to gain a greater interpretation of how and why it was written. To interpret what more the speaker was trying to convey through their writing.
While reading a well written story I am conscious of the atmosphere the author creates through the particular style they choose to use. As a reader, I am able to admire the way in which the writer presents their characters and setting, and be conscious of the overall voice used in their writing. The "voice" used in the writing is often the most obvious aspect of an author's style to detect. The author's "voice" is the way
Throughout the course we have learned how to read and interpret poetry with a better understanding of the mechanics that power the poem. Tone, pace, rhyme scheme, theme, and other various components within a poem develop an understanding of the work allowing for critical analysis. By reading poetry comprehending its various nuances and being able to reflect on the period of which it is written, provides a view into the past. Using culture, economics, and race are all factors that influence the writer and may even be the theme of the poem. A poem that had caught my eye recently, All-American Sestina although written in 1940, contains some of the issues that we are faced with today. It will be intriguing to consider the past before the united states entered world war two and examine how the author perceived the country at the time and how these matters have shaped over the course of 77 years.
Born in Senegal around 1753, Phillis Wheatley became an important American poetic figure. At the age of 8, she was kidnapped and brought to Boston on a slave ship and upon her arrival to Boston, she was quickly sold to John Wheatley (Bio). Under her new family, Phillis adopted the master’s last name, taken under the wife’s wing, and showed her deep intelligence. Even though suffering from poor health, Phillis’s intelligence did not go unnoticed; she received lessons in theology, English, Latin and Greek. Being a slave did not stop Phillis from learning and experiencing her life, she participated in the master’s family events and eventually became a family member. The irony in this situation is
In “America the beautiful” the author’s use of diction creates an uplifting spiritual tone in the poem. The author uses the same words “oh beautiful for…”focusing not on America's flaws but on the beauty. For instance the start of stanza 4 she writes “o beautiful 4 heroes proved in liberty strife who more than self her country loved and marymor than life”.She apads for the people who believe in freedom of america by sacrificing their lives for their
Authors use various styles of writing to appeal to different types of audiences. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and “The Most Dangerous Job” by Eric Schlosser both utilize ethos, pathos, and logos writing styles to convince the audience of their ideals. An author uses ethos in writing to show his/her credentials and explain why he/she is credible. Pathos appeals to an audience’s emotions and makes the audience feel sympathy or pity. The author draws feelings out of the audience and compels the audience to feel what the author wishes them to feel. Logos uses facts, statistics, historical and literal analogies, and quotes from authorities on a subject to convince the audience with logic or reason. Upton Sinclair and Eric Schlosser have the goal of exposing the corruption in the meatpacking industry, but the authors develop their arguments through similar and contrasting approaches.
The poem “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is a lengthy poem describing society and the social structure in the early 50’s from what it sounds. The short story “Girl,” deals with the experience of being young and female in a poor country. This poem describes a time when stereotypical gender roles where a huge part of society women had duties that only women could do such as clean, cook, wash clothing, watch the children and ect. And the men were head of the house hold and preserved as high and mighty, the untouchables by women and children. “This is how you iron your father 's khaki shirt so that it doesn 't have a crease; this is how you iron your father 's khaki pants so that they don 't have a crease;”(Kincaid) is an example of how the poem spells out how the women are supposed to cater to men, how to act in public settings and a variety of other things women were “meant to do” or as ordered by men.

America is known to be the country of liberty. The definition of Liberty is simply the reason America was created; it is a place where everyone is treated equal with hopes of achieving their American dream. As a result, many people dream of coming to live in the wonderful country known for its freedom. However, America does not seem to hold that value as it used to. In the poem “Let America Be America Again”, the poet Langston Hughes expresses his disappointment with the country. The poem was written in 1935 where discrimination and inequality still exist. In the poem “Let America Be America Again”, the poet Langston Hughes uses repetition and alliteration in order to show desirement for a better country and disappointment of the country America came to be, and also imagery in order to exemplify the struggles of those who came to live in country they thought was dream.
When you read a story,no matter if a short story or novel, you probably don't think that the stories you read are written similar or different from other stories by other authors. From the story to the writing style each piece of literature is its own independent piece. For example “The Lesson” By Toni Cade Bambara and “A Rose For Emily” By William Faulkner are two short stories written by two different authors.
