The movie was based on the non-fiction book with the same name by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. First, the police investigated that cash on the burglars was connected to a slush fund by the organization of Nixon’s campaign. The investigation showed that Richard Nixon used tap-recording systems in his offices and many conversations were recorded. The FBI revealed that two phones in the office of Democratic Party’s Headquarters were wire-tapped. The five men in burglar obviously attempted to set the wiretapping and communicate equipment. Second, there was an illegal cover up in the organization of Nixon when the name “Howard Hunt” was found in the address book of burglars. Hunt used to work for the White House and CIA till 1970. Nixon’s administration was definitely concerned because Hunt involved in a secret activity. Nixon pretended to be not known and involved in the Watergate. Later, at a conference, Nixon stated that Dean had conducted an investigation, but the fact was there was not any investigation. Third, there was a disbursement of money in the secret organization. Two reporters found out that $25,000 check deposit in the bank account of one of burglars. According to an employee, there was a group of five people who controlled the funds. There was $6 million cash coming in one or two day. One of burglars revealed that he deposited a check into an account controlled by himself and transferred it. The investigation showed many bank records of Miami bank. These funds were also used to pay for the attorneys of five burglars in the Watergate scandal. The corruption and fraud in the secret organization showed the dishonesty of Nixon’s
In all, I thought All The President’s Men was a great tool to learn more about the Watergate scandal and the Nixon administration. I liked the movie because it told the story as a narrative, rather than just listing facts. Woodward and Bernstein did a great job of revealing the scenario through their involvement with mysterious informant, Deep Throat, as well as detailing the Nixon administration’s corruption. I would recommend that anyone watch All The President’s Men because it adeptly portrays the media’s ability to influence politics and serve as a watchdog for the government. All The President’s Men is a great historical account of the Watergate break-in and the scandals that ensued.
In 1972, Richard M. Nixon hired five ex-cuban trained agents to break into the Watergate complex to gain information on George McGovern. The scandal started when Nixon hired Gordon Liddy and Howard Hunt to re-elect Nixon. Nixon knew he was going to win the Presidential campaign, but he didn’t he wanted to win by a landslide.
1972 – 1974: Watergate Scandal: In June, 1972, Police arrested five men who broke into the the Democratic National Committee Office in the Watergate District of Washington, D.C. When further investigated, two more men were arrested. Following a background check, it was revealed that the men belonged to a committee to re-elect the president. It was also revealed that men were paid by the committee and the committee was controlled by the people who work in the White House. This information was gathered by the Washington Post, which had an FBI informant, nicknamed “Deep Throat.” The investigation revealed that some of Nixon’s closest advisors may be involved in the scandal. Nixon was also thought to be involved as the investigation proceeded. During Senate hearings, Nixon denied an affiliation with the scandal, but it was revealed that Nixon recorded every conversation in this office. After refusing to hand-over the tapes, the Supreme Court ordered Nixon to do so. He did turnover the tapes, however there were minutes missing from the recordings. Congress drew up the Articles of Impeachment to impeach Nixon, but he decided to resign before he was
In June 1972, Nixon campaign people broke into the Democratic National Committee’s Watergate Central Station, stole duplicates of top-mystery archives and destroyed the workplace’s telephones. But after that they were captured inside the workplace of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), situated in the Watergate working in Washington D.C. Nixon tried to cover the activities of his people before the operation was done by the Watergate secret activities. He tried to stop the Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) from investing the activities, vanishing the proofs and changing and terminating the staff members. This act was an abuse of presidential power which was later found, and the president had to surrender.
The main objective of this investigation is to see if funds are being misappropriated and who is misappropriating these funds. In conducting this investigation we needed to take many steps to ensure that the tip that the department received was true. To begin we checked personnel records and company records to gather information (Albrecht, Albrecht, and Zimbelman, 216) on the suspect, Rita Crundwell. Information such as how long has this suspect has worked in the city, what her position is, and what it entails. We also went through the accounts that she is transferring the cities money into and verified that all of these are all legitimate accounts of the city. If we found any errors or accounts that were not legitimate we would note these down and ask Rita about these accounts during the interview.
During the early 1970’s, a scandal took place at the hands of former president, Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon wanted to ensure that he got the chance to get reelected. He took extreme measures to do so, one of those extreme measures included espionage. On June 17, 1972, five burglars were taken down to the police station after breaking into the Watergate complex buildings in Washington, D.C. The five burglars; James McCord, Virgilio Gonzalez, Frank Sturgis, Eugenio Martinez, and Bernard Baker. “These five men broke into Headquarters for the Democratic National Committee, which was located in the Watergate hotel. This triggered the entire scandal and eventually led to Nixon’s demise.”
The Watergate Scandal was truly the biggest political scandal in United States History. Over forty people where charged with crimes relating to the scandal. Bernstein and Woodward were given a fantastic oppourtunity to uncover something truly significant in history. The twenty-one months of investigative reporting done by these two men would ruin Nixon’s name and make these two common everyday reporters lives change forever. Woodward first got his life changing call on June 17th 1972 with his editor telling him about a small invasion of the Democratic Party Headquarters. With being related to the scandal, two members of President Nixon’s cabinet, H.R. Hadlemen and John Ehrlichman, quickly resigned. When first thought of the president even having something to do with the Watergate Scandal, he made every effort to possibly hide this career ruining event. The break in was first found by a security guard by the name of, Frank Wills. Wills saw a piece of tape covering a broken lock. Wills was
All the President’s Men was released in 1976 and had immediate repercussions from its release. The movie was based off two reporters (Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein) from the Washington Post that found details to the Watergate Scandal that ultimately lead to the resignation of Nixon. Through both obvious and not so obvious messaging this film had effects on the audiences, the political establishments and the elections for the upcoming years. When All the President’s
The movie “All the President's Men” (1976), is based on the work of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein two Washington Post newspaper writers, who uncovered the cover-up of the White House's involvement in the Democratic Party National headquarters, Watergate, break-in. At first, Bob Woodward discovers what seems to be a minor break-in but is surprised to find that top lawyers were already on the defense case. He also discovers that names and addresses of Republican fund organizers were being accused, which further aroused his suspicions. When he brings this to the attention of the head of the Washington Post, he is prepared to run with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to it. Their findings of this
Five men were arrested with electronic surveillance equipment trying to break into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) at the Watergate hotel. They had been wiretapping into the conversations of Larry O’Brien, the head of the DNC. All of the burglars had been found to be contacting E. Howard Hunt, a CIA officer working for Nixon. With this link directly tied to the president, Woodward and Bernstein were assigned to cover the story. Together, they wrote countless articles exposing corrupt government officials involved with the scandal (with the help from a secret government informant who they called “Deep Throat”). In 1973, it was discovered that Nixon had taped private conversations incriminating himself. When a prosecutor demanded to hear the tapes, Nixon refused. However, when the Supreme Court intervened, Nixon released clips of the tapes that had significant gaps. Eventually, Nixon (who was under extreme pressure from the media) released transcripts of the missing tapes, revealing that he had ordered the entire operation and used money to keep everyone quiet. On August 9th, 1974, in fear of impeachment, Richard Nixon became the first president in the history of the United States of America to
Watergate is the popular name for the political scandal and constitutional crisis that began with the arrest of five burglars who broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office in Washington D.C. on the night of June 17, 1972. It ended with the resignation of president Richard M. Nixon. The burglars and two co-potters-G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt were indicated on charges of burglary, conspiracy, and wiretapping. Four monthes later, they were convicted and sentenced to prison terms by District Court Judge John J. Sirica, who was convicted that pertinent details had not been unveiled during the trial and proffered leniency in exchange for further information. As it
As time progressed and the investigation began to uncover the truth about what transpired at the Watergate apartment complex several things became evident: most of the burglars were ex-CIA and ex-FBI personnel, the burglars were paid with money directly from the re-election campaign and President Nixon not only knew about and sanctioned the break-in but deliberately attempted to cover it up. When called before Congress to testify about his knowledge, White House staffer John Dean testified that Nixon and his aides attempted to “stonewall” the investigation. As Congress continued its inquiry, it became clear
Once broken, the seal of Watergate could never be replaced. The five men brought arrested for breaking into the Watergate Complex had to be served fair justice. The official hearings began on January 8th, 1973 (Files 1). However, fair trials would not prevail. Edward B. Hunt ordered the payout of twenty thousand dollars to each member of the break-in team, fifty thousand for his lawyer, and seventy thousand dollars for himself (Files 6). The “hush money” proved successful. All four Cuban men pled
Among them would be Bob Bernstein, and Carl Woodward, reporters for The Washington Post. They used a background source “Deep Throat” to uncover the relationship between the scandal and the White House. “Deep Throat” later announced was W.Mark Felt. The Senate makes a special committee that nominated Archibald Cox to head the special investigations. James D St. Clair was appointed to be Nixon’s defense counsel. Startling information shocked the nation. There was a check of $25000 in one of the burglar’s bank account. Archibald then learns that Nixon taped all his conversations in the white house. Archibald demanded tapes but Nixon denied. Archibald was getting close to uncovering the case so Nixon demanded him to be fired. He demanded Attorney General Richardson but he protested and resigned. Next in line was Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus who also protested and resigned. Finally, Solicitor General Robert Bork carried out orders. John Sirica, a judge and he also realized not all the pieces of the puzzle were put together.
