Michael can throw as hard, maybe harder, then any other 12 year old alive. His fastballs being clocked at eighty miles-per-hour. You would think the worst was behind when his dad, brother, and he immigrated from Cuba, but I don't think anyone can predict what is in store for Michael Arroyo. Michael lost his mother to cancer back in Cuba at a young age, and his father died of a heart attack a few months after coming to America leaving his seventeen year-old brother Carlos and him living on there own.

When analyzing the culture of a country, many different pieces of that country must be taken into consideration. What often comes to mind are the foods, music, festivals, dances, and clothing of that country. The promise of a new life at a wedding is an optimistic rebirth; the loss of a lover is an obligatory uprooting. Allegra Goodman’s “La Vita Nuova” records the changed life of a freshly dumped bride-to-be. As she endures her altered life, Amanda occupies herself by babysitting her student Nathaniel. Amanda uses irony, dark humor, and juxtaposition as a coping mechanism; instead of facing the new life she has to live, she uses sardonic reflection to elongate her mourning period.
There are many eerie stories in the Mexican culture. I didn't grow up with a grandma, so I didn't really know that story, till a few years ago. La Llorona has many similarities to the Medea. She is one of the most is known in the Spanish language. The English language she is known as "the weeping known ghost in Texas. I agree with you, Erin. The fundamental aspect of man that makes him marvelous, according to Pico, is that he is essentially free to choose his own destiny. I loved the question Pico posed: “Why, I asked, should we not admire the angels themselves and the beatific choirs more” (28)? After all, what makes man more marvelous than the angels they themselves praise? Following this, Pico made an important distinction between mankind and both the creatures that dwell in Heaven and on Earth: “The nature of all other creatures is defined and restricted within laws which We have laid down; you, by contrast, impeded by no such restrictions, may, by your own free will, to whose custody We have assigned you, trace for yourself the lineaments of your own nature” (29). Here, we see that through personal thought, decisions and actions, man can, as Erin has quoted, descend to a lower form of life or ascend to a divine life (29). According to Pico, not even the highly-regarded angels posses this free-will. Therefore, now we begin to understand that it is not a matter of hierarchical rank that makes man marvelous, yet the unique ability humans have has to shape their life. This is why there is nothing more marvelous than man.
La Bienvenida was a cultural event that took place on Mexican Independence Day. The reason for this event was to welcome new Latino students to Fresno State and to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. During this event I learned about many programs that exist on campus. The atmosphere of the event was comfortable and it allowed people to enjoy themselves. There was over 40 programs and services that were present at this event and there was a program for everyone. La Bienvenida was a very fun event that I would recommend this event to other students because they could learn information about services offered at Fresno State. Not only will they learn new information, they will enjoy fun activities and free tacos at the end.
The Life of Lazarillo De Tormes was written in 1554. This novel was an inspiring and great representation of a segment in the 16th century Spanish society. Even though the Author is unknown, it was translated by W.S. Merwin and introduced by Juan Goytisolo. The Life of Lazarillo De Tormes is centered on a young boy who has to adept in the world daily struggles for existence and goes through many experiences along the way ,becoming a servant for many different masters. He also discovers the world’s injustices, and adapts to what he has to go through in his journey to survive. Throughout the novel The Life of Lazarillo De Tormes shows how the fictional literature plays a huge part in social criticism, the Spanish economy has a big effect, and how the squire and other characters reflect upon the novel.
Tato Laviera, a great Puerto Rican poet, writes one of his most famous and prideful poems called "AmeRican" majorly composed of metaphors, where he dreams of a time when his people, the Puerto Ricans, can create, or how as he states in his poem "give birth" to a perfect race in which we live in peace and happiness; where all cultures are welcome because we ourselves are forged by various races and cultures, and we do not judge others by mere race. Hence, comes the name of “AmeRican”, because we can make the American society a better place. The main subjects that I will focus on are the meanings embedded in the poem discussing only the most important parts, the relationship of the American and Puerto Rican culture and the tension that lies between them. I will also focus on one of the main ideas of the author: a utopian society conveyed by Puerto Rican culture.
In Christina Rossetti's poem “Amor Mundi” the speaker dives into the lives of the young couple as he narrates their journey. Throughout the poem Rossetti has created a biblical mash-up with many stories and ideas slung together into a poem that never ends in depth. While perhaps this poem does not seem to relate to life now there are still many truths behind it. As the couple travels through the stanzas on a journey in life so too does everyone else. Love is blinding, temptation tempting, and overall the bad things look so good. Reading this poem gives a bit of the wisdom the couple lacks and analysing it even more.
