Alternative Media Critique:
Why are so Many Aboriginal Women Being Murdered in Canada?

One of the most unique qualities that Canada holds, is without a doubt the Aboriginal population, nevertheless they are repeatedly misrepresented in Canadian media or not at all (Kozolanka et al., 2012). As Vice Media’s, Grace Wyler points out in her May 2014 article entitled, “Why are so Many Aboriginal Women Being Murdered in Canada?” Wyler, whose works predominantly focus on American politics, chose to unexpectedly write about Canadian social concerns (2016). The structure of an article involves 3 factors; the organization type, the workplace structure, and the revenue stream (Anton, p 27). These 3 factors are important because it give readers an insight to the motivates and influences behind the articles. Discussing structure with Wyler’s article platform, Vice Media -a divisional structure style workplace, that is categorized as a for-profit company (Vice Media, 2016), and gains revenue through advertisements (Vice Media, 2016). As for content, according to Anton’s Typology of Media, it is important to look into the political, social, and cultural aspects of the article (27). Such as the types of articles & advisements, editorial stance, the tagline, and images, to give readers a greater understanding of the core values of the source (Anton, 27). Vice Media tends to report apolitical, national and international news, politics, culture, & social issues. In Vice’s Media Kit (2016), they make reference to their ad content “VICE’s creative and interactive design teams develop cross-platform custom ad products for brands, tailored to deliver against specific campaign objectives.” The website's tagline articulates it as an “ever expanding galaxy of immersive, investigative, uncomfortable, and occasionally uncouth journalism” (2016). If she stopped propaganda techniques, remain unbiased and honest, audiences will see the truth, because it is a just cause. However any form of alternative media willing to articulate the true stories happening in our society, that are regularly missed in mainstream media, is a great use of their platform, if used appropriately. Wyler’s article was an example of how alternative media can broadcast the stories society needs to hear, despite her disingenuous methods
