Eight ‘Big Oil’ companies, the government, and the state of Alaska founded Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (APSC) in 1970. The purpose of APSC was to “design, construct, operate and maintain the [Trans Atlantic Pipeline System]” (Alyeska Pipeline Services Company, 2011). Oil was first discovered in the Alaskan water in the “Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope in 1968,” and the purpose of the Trans Atlantic Pipeline System (TAPS) is to “move oil from the North Slope of Alaska to the northernmost ice-free port in Valdez, Alaska” (Alyeska Pipeline Services Company, 2011).
