Ambassador Iogu Research Paper

Good Essays

Ambassador Iogu’s comment, “Malaria is not a problem in most of the developing world, although that may be changing”, refers to the dispersion of diseases due to increased travel. If a person has contacted a disease such as West Nile virus or Malaria in an underdeveloped country, then travels to a developed country without knowing they have contracted the virus, the virus can easily be spread before the individual begins showing symptoms that they are ill. The ambassador could also be referring to individuals in developed countries are opting not to vaccinate or take certain medications because of the harm they can cause the human body. Without the proper medication or vaccine an individual can easily contract diseases and viruses. As more …show more content…

There is no scientific proof done by researchers to provide any evidence the chemical might do harm, but there isn’t any research that says it does no harm with exposure overtime. The precautionary principle relies on our history with asbestos, PCB, and chlorofluorocarbons destroying the ozone. Therefore, a strength in the precautionary principle is the research it acquires in order to provide enough evidence a chemical like DDT can become more harmful than beneficial. However, the precautionary principle is only based on skepticism and not actual data found from trials in research. The precautionary principle has the capacity to save lives by reducing the human race and planet Earth from being exposed to dangerous chemicals. However, the implications of using the precautionary principle can lead to several deaths to diseases like West Nile Virus and Malaria because of the DDT ban based on skepticism and history …show more content…

They both rely on data, but the precautionary principle is more of a question of “what if?”, based on previous data found in other chemicals which resulted in severe harm to the planet and human race. The precautionary principle is like saying, “We better not use bombs on China because it will start a war.” We are not 100 percent sure it will, but based on history, we can only assume it will. The risk versus benefit analysis only relies on data. It has all of the information found in research studies conducted to find the risk of using DDT out in large populated areas. Once the risk assessment has been completed, the benefits of using DDT are listed as well. Using DDT prevents mosquitos from going into homes, and because it repels them, they will not infect them with the Malaria and West Nile viruses they carry. Risk versus benefits analysis views all of the statistics associated with using DDT, therefore it does not look into the future to see what can happen with too much exposure to
