The militarization of America and the transformation into police state does indeed deserve to be recognized and addressed. The United States of America is indeed militarized, and this should not be tolerated because it is unfair to the innocent people that live here. Recently, at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on September 9, lawmakers grilled Administration officials about the provision of military-grade equipment to State and local police departments by the Federal Government (“Police Use of Military Equipment” 1). In the past forty years, there has been a dramatic change from flatfoots walking the neighborhood beat to aggressive teams serving warrants on nonviolent suspects with the help of armored personnel carriers, flash bang grenades, and battering rams (Balko 1). Although militarization is more of a recent situation, it still can be traced all the way back to the 1960’s and the 1970’s. Some situations, such as segregation and racism, are some of the reasons that America is so overprotected nowadays. The United States has evolved, security-wise, over the years and this does in fact have a negative effect on the United States. Research shows that militarization rarely even works (“Why Militarized Police Departments Don’t Work” 2). If militarization does not make a difference in the way that people act, then why begin to militarize the United States at all? The militarization of America could also tend to make the citizens of a certain area uncomfortable. The majority of people living in a certain city or area most likely do not enjoy being constantly reminded that they live in a more dangerous area. The citizens living in these unsafe areas can begin to feel overprotected if they are constantly seeing higher level police in their neighborhood. They can feel
