In my personal opinion, the biggest challenge America is facing right now is our politics. Zakaria describes our current state a “do-nothing politics”. America’s politicians are seen as not actually do anything because they can’t come to a compromise on simple agreements. I believe this to be the biggest issue Zakaria talked about because even though right now most of America’s problems are not too severe, by not doing anything about them, they are only going to worsen
Dinesh D’Souza wrote What’s So Great About America after the attack of September 11, 2001. After the attacks, most people grieved, even if they knew on one that died; however, people also banded together and fought against a group they thought were attacking them. He wrote this book so that pride for America would radiate from the people long after the attacks; that they also would not so easily forget what they did for the country.
A viewer of the documentary Right America: Feeling Wronged would conclude the main points of the American Right’s platform to be ludicrous based on the portrayal in the documentary. Many of the Right Americans wanted tax cuts to the wealthy. They believed the wealthy would use that extra money to employ more people and therefore spread the wealth. The Right Americans also argued against abortion and homosexuality. They believed no matter what, abortion was the wrong option and believed the Bible clearly said homosexuality was erroneous. One last thing that really united the Right Americans in the film was their hatred of Barack Obama. Many argued that Barack Obama was a socialist and that he was similar to Hitler and physically was Osama Bin Laden.
In the poem “America,” by Tony Hoagland, the idea of Americans being consumed with their money is shown using symbolism and metaphors. The speaker in this poem is a teacher whose name is never mentioned. One thing revealed in the poem is that the speaker has a father who is presumably very wealthy and successful. One of the teacher’s students compares America to a maximum security prison. A recurring theme throughout “America” is Hoagland showing examples of America’s greedy society using a teacher, student, and a father’s experiences. Using metaphors of money and symbols of rivers filled with merchandise, Tony Hoagland captures how the teacher begins to think after he hears his student compare America to a maximum security prison.
economic crisis. The new administration will need to focus on chipping away at these roadblocks to the
This piece of creative writing shows the writers frustration on how Americans address their social and political issues. Many people have partially accepted to embrace the uncomfortable situation rather than striving to address the cause of the discomfort. Deriving evidence from the various situation, the writer suggests that almost everyone is suffering from the social and political discomforts, but various factors hinder them from taking actions. According to the writer, America becoming unobtrusive, people hesitating to make their voice heard and to claim their
Our America by LeAlan Jones and LLoyd Newman makes readers feel bad about children deaths in Chicago which inspires people to help even though it makes readers feel bad.
Different ideologies tend to appeal to different demographic characteristics such as gender, class, race, etc. because a person’s background will affect which system of ideas they most closely align with. Liberalism and conservatism, for example, are ideologies that regularly contradict each other, because they appeal to different demographics based upon many factors such as class, race, gender, religion, etc. The general worldview of liberalism is that people have individual rights and liberty, while promoting progress. On the other hand, conservatism places greater importance of keeping tradition and strict regulation of rules. In determining the extent of appeal to different demographics, one must assess the ways in which both ideologies
I think a very important issue for me is not becoming complacent as an American, because you always hear about this American superiority, and a lot of people, both young and old will just sort of think that America’s going to be on top just for however long because that’s all we’ve grown up to know; that we’re the number one nation in the world and we’re so powerful. But in reality, I think that a lot can change, even in our generation and over the next 10, 20 to 50 years. There are nations like China, Russia, and these other developing countries that are really on the rise, and I think it’s important to know that America is what we will make of it. It’s not always just going to be number one, it’s not always going to be the most powerful country
Our 1 biggest problem is dissatisfaction with the government. We are dissatisfied with the government because the government was making bad decisions for use and lets in people that we dislike. Example, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were the people running for president. After Donald J Trump was president many people were angry and that is why we are so dissatisfied. The second problem is immigration.
Many of Americans today do not take the time to realize that our nation is little by little falling apart. Our leaders are corrupt, our environment is being destroyed, and there are thousands of children being born each day. The three major social problems facing the American citizens in the 21st century are births to unmarried woman, being able to trust or government and or leaders, and lastly destroying the environment.
Written in the first half of the 20th century, “Let America Be America” is a poem that documents and responds to the oppressed state of the United States, in both the past and present. The poem is a plea for a return to the original principles of freedom that our country has seemingly forgotten. Additionally, the speaker sees America as the broken home to oppressed people who have lost sight of the ultimate goal of freedom and happiness. Although America is often perceived as the “land of the free,” Langston Hughes’s poem contradicts this ideology by not only painting a vivid picture of oppression in America but also by providing a desperate hope for the future.
The government has not been able to solve problems that have great effect on the population as shown, “The unemployment rate is dispiritingly high. The nations long-term fiscal health is at risk, and the American political system... the world’s best hope, shows no sign of reaching solutions commensurate with the problems of the day. “The problems today are beyond compare to those of lest century, the problems of today go beyond the surface, they hit the core all the way to racial discrimination to feminine-male pay difference. The author phrase ... the crisis of our time is to show the comparisons of the obstacles we must overcome to back then and most importantly how the dream has become stronger.
I believe that America is facing a great deal of problems at this time; however, the top four issues in my opinion are economic instability, unemployment, gun control and limitations on Constitutional rights. I selected my top four based upon how the issue impacts American citizens and their families. I also selected things that I
By adjusting to the new reality of our ignorance, competition, and worldly participation I believe America would put itself in a good place to deal with the “rise of the rest”. I think Zakaria points out true issues America has faced and is yet to face. It’s all about the present, as much as we are driving toward the future, it's really important to deal what we have at hand. Although we may be slowing in our advancements America is still in a very good position as a country and has come a long way. Zakaria
In Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again” he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone. Hughes talks about an America where both whites and colored people will have equality in all aspects socially, politically, and economically. What Hughes is saying is that both whites and colored
