Chris Ebert Ms. Gladfelter ENG 1030 10 October 2015 Factual Argument Essay In modern society, people often base their judgment by what they are told their entire life. But what if, what you were being told was not actually the truth. In America, “The Greatest Country on Earth,” people are very naive in there way of thinking. If you took 80% of the American people and sat them down and asked, “Do you believe America is the greatest country on earth?" Majority of the answers would be “yes,” and if you were to argue otherwise most would not be able to back up their belief with factual evidence. Just because we have diversity, opportunity, and freedom thats supposed to make us the greatest country on earth? Saying that America is the greatest country on earth is more of an ego boost than a factual statement. Plain and simple, America is not the greatest country on earth. At one time America used to be, but what used to be is …show more content…
They are at the top for literacy second for math proficiency, and an international trade group. He identifies that, “Students from elementary and high school are among the worlds best test scores.” But many years ago, this was not always the case. Leopold’s article describes how Finland made a monumental turn around with their educational system starting from “heavy investing in teacher education” all the way to “child poverty”. This article just goes to show how Finland can turn around their educational system, then America can too. Business in America is not as great as it is perceived to be as well. Leopard states, “America prides itself on the ability to conduct business, but surprisingly America does not lead the world in several indices of commerce. The international Finance company and World Bank ranked 183 countries in 11 areas; the US did not finish first in any of the
The United States of America, the self-proclaimed sole remaining superpower, often touts that it is the greatest nation in the world. Yet, when the data is analyzed, this claim is proven time and time again to be wrong, whether it is math or science, literacy or numbers, household income or workforce. Time and time again, and the numbers continue to slip. Healthcare is no exception. In 2012, the United States ranked thirty-second worldwide in life expectancy (Avendano and Kawachi 2014). Of the thirty-four Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations in 2010, the United States ranked twenty-sixth in infant mortality (MacDorman et al. 2010). In a 1998 study of thirteen developed nations (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States), the United States ranked, on average, twelfth. The rankings for the United States on each of the sixteen health indicators was: thirteenth for low-birth-weight percentages; thirteenth for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall; eleventh for post neonatal mortality; thirteenth for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes); eleventh for life expectancy at one year for females and twelfth for males; tenth for life expectancy at fifteen years for females and twelfth for males; tenth for life expectancy at forty years for females and ninth for males; seventh for life expectancy at sixty-five years for
Many people know that the U.S. does not rank very high in education. You hear about how they are always trying to improve education, but they still fall short of where they strive to be. In Anu Partanen’s “Finland’s School Success, What Americans Keep Ignoring” she addresses this issue. She points out what Americans are doing wrong, what Finland is doing right, and how the U.S. can improve the education system in many ways.
As a kid I have to many things to say about what america means to me, but in life I can always decide so america to me is the best land in the world because we have had a major history of many important people, everyday people risk their life here and protect us.Many people die for us to live, with all the history in america I can try to sum it down a bit to important times in history, George Washington our 1st president of the United States of America, born February 22, 1732 and sadly died December 14, 1799. After his death America changed for the better.
For many years the school system in Finland has been very successful. In the PISA survey, which compares reading, math and science knowledge of 15 year olds around the world, Finland is not only the top European country but also competes with Asian giants like Shanghai, Singapore and South Korea. But what makes the educational system in this small country so strikingly different from others in the western world.
America the greatest! Some people may say, but why? Others may ask. Throughout America there are various opinions about the country as a whole.Yeah there are good parts, but there are also bad parts; a country is only great if everything is balanced, Economically, Socially, and Politically. In this case Michael Moore a left-wing political activist and author states that it isn’t in his book Stupid White Men saying that “everything sucked” referring to the United States. After reading the “Introduction” to Stupid White Men the readers will soon realize that Moore has very biased opinions on the United States.
Americas greatness is a controversial topic on the worlds standards of living. In the opening scene of the television show “The Newsroom”, Will McAvoy the news anchor, is in an auditorium participating in a panel of politically knowledgeable people. McAvoy who is the protagonist of the show, he avoids answering one of the questions asked by a student “Why is America the greatest country in the world?”. He finally does answer “it is not the greatest country in the world.” By analyzing the video “The Newsroom Opening Scene” the viewer sees how McAvoy appeals to ethos, logos and pathos to express his answer.
There is no possible evidence or argument could persuade me that it is true because if America was the greatest nation in the world, there should have been no racism and discrimination, however, America is still struggling with the issues. That is one of many facts that America is not the greatest nation in the world. America does not have the best education system, economy, employment rate, and so on.
In the world, countries are competing to have the best education system. Some countries such as America spend thousands of dollars per student during the school year yet have average test score. America should focus in a different system to help students raise their test scores and education. America should look at Finland education system. Finland grants equality education to all, have a better education structure system, and Finland comes to the top in test scores. While some people might say Finland does not have a large population, which helps the country with less education cost.
This paper is a self-examination view of why I view America as the greatest country in the world and how some in academia have the opposite view. Also I will reflect on how America has changed dramatically over the past 45+ years. I will examine the writings and views in particular of Howard Zinn.
A lot of American citizens feel that their country is the best, however; “we’re 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, number 4 in labor force and number 4 in exports” (Jeff Daniels, The Showroom). There is also a huge amount of injustice that still goes on here such as a corrupt justice system. More recently, there have been open protests of these injustices at NFL football games by its players who refuse to stand for the national anthem. Although, not everyone feels the same way. This is because everyone perceives the flag and America itself differently. No two people will ever think exactly the same about everything.
America is not the Greatest Country is the first episode of HBO’s new television series The Newsroom. A news anchor, Will McAvoy, is seated between a strong liberalist, Susan, and a conservative, Lewis, on a journalism panel. When asked to describe why America is the greatest country from a student in the audience the anchor envisions someone in the audience using cue cards telling him, “It isn’t.” This persuades him to give his true opinion, and the anchor continues with a speech about why he feels this way. Will McAvoy uses bipartisan journalism to give the audience the impression that his approach on the subject is unbiased to distract them from his anti-American argument.
Americans have been breaded to believe America is the greatest country in the world. America is a place of the freedom and possibilities, an outside looking in a very desirable place to live. However, America is not as great as Americans believe. Sure Americans have a wider range of freedom then most countries, but has plenty of issues that will repulse others from coming to the land of the free. Issues such as women’s rights, racism, and discrimination plague U.S. citizens nearly each day and that should change now.
Do you know what nation still says they are the best? Or how about what country has fallen off of the leaderboards drastically in multiple categories of debate? America has been through some tough times and we still are, however, there is no other place I would rather live than the good ol’ U S of A. But, statistics beg to differ. We might never take what is handed to us or we even might go out and we get what needs to be done, done, but that’s just the can do attitude that got us here in the first place, being at the bottom of the list is what I am talking about. Our freedom was fought for it wasn 't given to us, this might be true, this might not, but as of now we are ranked 12th in the world based on freedom, to me 12th place isn’t 1st place. After we earned our freedom we struggled to build ourselves up from nothing, and all that nothing turned into something. We are known as one of the biggest economic forces in the history of the world and we like it that way. No other country can compete with us in any situation possible, because America is just that great.
The United States is not the greatest country in the world. However, for a very long time, people have believed that the United States tops the list. This is because of the classic lifestyle and technological advancements portrayed in our daily media. The United States is portrayed as a country of peace and optimum harmony. Consequently, we get the impression that United States is the best place to be. The younger generation seems to enjoy life to the fullest with almost no regrets. After all, most of us can drive a car at the age of 16; compare that to other countries at 18. We have access to pretty much whatever we need. Most adults are not constantly monitoring and hovering over their children. They have jobs and financial prosperity is
I believe that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world. The foundations of this country were set by our founding fathers over 200 years ago, and they still remain strong today. Ever since I first became a teenager and got more involved and more interested about the history of our country and the problems we have faced, my belief has grown stronger. Even though this country has been through multiple problems over the past 300 years, I still believe that we are the greatest country in the world.
