All of this information just shows how people are being told to change to fit what is beautiful now. Everyone is beautiful in their own ways, yet we overlook these because they aren’t at the same level as everyone else. We should not root ourselves in society’s version of beauty because of how often it changes. Society’s current version of beautiful includes being photoshopped, participating in extreme dieting or exercise compulsion, having plastic surgery and other surgeries such as a gastric bypass or bariatric surgery (Afful). They aren’t actually the person we see in the magazines, so why are we basing our entire standard of American beauty around a group of females whose BMI is under the average? One bad comment toward someone can make them feel awful about themselves. When someone’s self-esteem is lowered, it causes them to start doing things to change themselves(Sharma). They start diets and begin working out at a very unhealthy rate. Some people even undergo surgeries like the ones discussed above to help them lose weight (“Live Life…”). Women even often engage in eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia to help themselves lose weight even though they are hurting themselves in the long run (Brockmeyer). Anorexia and Bulimia have side effects such as slow heart rate, high/low blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, muscle loss/weakness, dehydration, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, tooth decay and staining, pancreatitis, and heart disease/failure (“Types and…”). All of these side effects will negatively affect someone’s life. It may affect their length of life, quality of life, or even how they look. Low self-esteem may even cause some people to look for an outlet for themselves and turn to drugs or alcohol to “help”.
