In “American Born Chinese” Gene Luen Yang tells three different stories all dealing with some aspect of being an American born with Chinese heritage. He begins his graphic novel with a re-telling of the Monkey King, a Chinese legend about a king who is repeatedly denied his wish to join the gods, goddesses, demons, and spirits in heaven. Seeming to be ashamed of being a monkey, the monkey kings adorns a pair a shoes in an attempt to assimilate into the group he wishes to belong to. He even takes it a step further decreeing that, “All monkeys must where shoes”.
