John Locke’s Second Treatise on Government also highlights the rights and responsibilities of a U.S. citizen, but most importantly it supports natural law and natural rights. Locke believed that the government should protect the natural law, the right that everyone is born with. From influencing the American Founders to establishing principles that have been found in the American Constitution, the Age of Enlightenment, the Magna Carta, and the English Bill of Rights have all aided in the construction of America. As expressed in the We The People: The Citizen & The Constitution textbook by the Center for Civic Education, the Age of Enlightenment has influenced the American Founders, by increasing national higher power/authority, creating a democratic republic, and including principles from the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. The English Bill of Rights was established in 1689 when King James II continuously abused his power over the State. This document was actually quite like the Magna Carta and gave forth to the idea that no laws should be enforced nor should other governmental acts be established, such as creating more taxes, without the permission of the Parliament. These actions are also shown in the United States Constitution as it influenced our shared powers, both within the states and the three branches of government, insuring no higher power has absolute control over the country. “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” (U.S. Const. amend. X) is an example of this; this amendment insures that the people still hold their own

In his Second Treatise on Government Locke focus’ on liberalism & capitalism, defending the claim that men are by nature free and equal against the idea that God had made all people subject to a king. He argued that people have ‘natural rights’, such as the right to life, liberty, and property, that hold the foundation for the major laws of a society. He says, “…we must consider, what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit.” (2nd Treatise, Chapter 2, sec 4). John Locke used this claim, that all men were naturally free and equal, for understanding the idea of a government as a result of a social contract. This is where people in the state of nature transfer some of their rights to the government in order to better guarantee the steady and comfortable enjoyment of their lives, liberty, and property.
Locke believed that people are willing to unite under a form of government to preserve their lives, liberty, and estate. Since natural law is already good, government not only preserves natural law, but also works to enhance it.
