What Does It Mean To Be An American? For hundreds of years the United States has been attracting immigrants from a variety of different countries, races, and religions to come live in a land full of freedom and opportunity. These people were looking for more than just rights and privileges. Their real desire was to become something that represents pride and honor, an American. Being an American means much more than living in the United States. Along with the name come a number of different benefits such as, freedom of speech to express your own opinion, freedom of religion, and equality for all, including different sexes, races, religions and status. I could go on and on but at the end of the day majority of Americans to me are an embarrassment and don't stand by what we are supposed to stand for and it's sad.” To me, what it means to be an American goes beyond your place of birth or the documents you have, back to when masses of Irish, Italian and Eastern Europeans crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life. What it means to be an American is less about who you are than what you are about-- how you live your life, how you contribute to this country, how you pledge allegiance to a flag hoping and praying it will make room for you. What it means to be an American is in the hearts of the people who, in their struggles and heartaches, in their joys and triumphs, fight for America and fight to be American every day. In conclusion, the definition of an American is of or relating to the United States of American or its people, language, or culture.
