American Gothic
There are many things that go into the thought behind creating such a masterful art piece that would be shown in famous museums. The thing about art is that the viewer can understand the artist through his final piece. These pieces can be shown around the world to all different people. Chicago, also known as “The Windy City”, has many famous museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago. The museum is one of the most famous art museums in the world attracting more then 1.5 million visitors annually. The Art Institute contains collections of Impressionist, Post-impressionists, and American paintings.
Among the most important pieces from the Art Institute that I found is Grant Wood’s most famous painting in 1930. Wood mastered

He notably used balance, repetition, and shape throughout this work of art. One could notice the balance and repetition greatly through the woman and pitchfork. As for the woman, the patterns on her apron are repeated on the curtains of the single oversized window. From this repetition, one could interpret that Grant Wood wanted the reader to understand that during this time women worked indoors. Furthermore, the repetition can assist the idea of the couple living in a well- crafted world because this single repetition can show how the couple knows where their duties belong. To explain further, the man, Wood’s dentist, is holding a pitchfork. The shape of three prongs is repeated throughout the piece of art. It is repeated by the front door, the cactus sitting by the front door, the windows, and the man’s apparel. The upstairs window also mirrors …show more content…
As for space, Grant clarified the roles the figures play. One may noticed the appropriate use of space Wood uses. He overlaps the two figures keeping the male in front. This slight adjustment can get the viewer the message of the male being more dominant. During this time, men were considered more dominant in the sense that they did the hard labor outside. Also to clarify their roles, he dresses the man and woman in their appropriate attire for a days work. The woman is dressed in a purple apron and the man is in blue overalls. This apparel allows the viewer to understand where they belong and how their facial expression corresponds to the color they are wearing. The woman should belong in the house cleaning and cooking based solely on the fact that she is wearing an apron and that pattern is repeated on the upstairs window curtain. Her apron is a dark purple. Research suggest that purple is often associated with calmness. Her face is elongated giving her a more relaxed face. On the other hand, the man’s clothing suggests that he should be working outside on the farm feeding livestock. The blue in the overalls and dark blue in his coat are commonly creating a sense of a disengaged feeling. His facial expression is also elongated creating a disinterested
Southern Gothic literature, which is a sub-genre of the Gothic writing style, is unique to the American South. Southern Gothic literature has many of the same aspects as Gothic literature; it focuses on topics such as death, madness, and the super natural as well has having many mystical, bizarre, violent, and grotesque aspects. These tools are used "to explore social issues and reveal the cultural character of the American South (Wikipedia)."
It is almost a reflection of the man’s trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window of the house that sits in between both figure’s heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of the woman’s outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the house’s window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork’s slender prongs and the green stripes on the man’s shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer’s eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood’s use of verticality in this painting is overwhelming.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
The American Gothic Genre, which focuses on the paranormal aspects of life, began in the 1700s and is still used today. Kelly Link is the author of “The Specialist’s Hat”, and the author of many literary collections. She's received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and has co-edited a number of anthologies. She uses imagery, intimidating diction, and literary devices to convey the emotion and theme of snakes, hollowness, and death in this story.
New York City, one of the greatest cities of the world, is remarkable because of its history, culture, and diversity. It is world renowned for its skyscrapers, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Broadway entertainment, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, and even restaurants specializing in ethnic foods. However, the thing that most intrigues and excites me about New York City is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“John B McLemore lives in Shittown, Alabama,” Brian Reed quoted. Many people today can relate to some of the problems John faces in S-Town. Most of these problems are derived from southern gothic characteristics within the podcast. The podcast uses many different southern gothic characteristics in order to make it more interesting. Many of the examples of these characteristics are more modern so that they relate to our current society. S-Town is a piece of contemporary Southern Gothic Literature because of its use of social issues, irony, and outsiders.
Cleveland has been fortunate enough to have become home several popular museums, including The Cleveland Museum of Art. The museum is filled with impressive masterpieces from the beginning of human documented time to today’s world. This free exhibit offers an exciting, enjoyable experience to those of all ages and those of all backgrounds. From the interactive futuristic portions of the building, to the delicate works of the past, there is something at this museum to please each person’s artistic mindset.
As Edgar Degas once said, “ Art is not what you see, but what others make you see”. The St. Louis Art Museum is a place for artist to display their art and give spectators the option to see art from a new perspective. This was the case for me. As we walked up to the beautifully structured building that stood so tall and wide, my expectations were extremely high. At first glance I notice the bronze statue of King Louis IX of France riding high on his horse. From this statue alone, my expectations of the art museum grew stronger. I have never been to an art museum before, so I wasn’t sure of what to expect. My first expectation was to see huge detailed sculptures right as I walked through the door. That expectation didn’t come true.
Number Eight: Museum of Modern Art.Down in the streets of Midtown Manhattan, the MoMA is often identified as the most influential museum of modern art in the world, and it has been important in developing and collecting modernist art.
Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic.
The First painting that I was drawn to in the special exhibit “America after the fall: Painting in the 1930s”, was American Gothic by Grant Wood. This was a work that I had seen all through out my life because it was the staple image to represent the steadfast American pioneer spirit. Seeing it in person, rather than reproductions or prints let me realize why it was such an iconic American painting. It was a twentieth century painting with nineteenth century characteristics. The work is in the style of a typical portrait painting in the nineteenth century.
Southern gothic literature is partly inspired by gothic literature. Southern gothic literature is a southern genre where the story is focused around gruesome or dreary ideas. The characters are also normally damaged, delusional or mentally ill. In the two short stories, “A Rose for Emily” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” both have elements of southern gothic literature.
With exhibitions of the most thought-provoking art, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago is one of the Nation’s largest facilities devoted to the art of our time (“About the MCA”) . The mission of the MCA is to offer a direct experience to the public of modern day art and living artists. German architect Joseph Paul Kleihues designed the new building with seven times the square feet of its previous facility (“The Building”) . October of 1967 the museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. The Museum of Contemporary Art is a symbol of modern art, culture, and the artist of our time. It is a stepping stone in history and will leave footprints in the heart of Chicago for many generations to come.
Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through every element of its construction.
