To me “American” means to be living in a country where we are living the land of free and where we have rights. A characteristic that I believe best illustrates a distinctly “American” identity is money. The reason why I say money is because most Americans are really just too concentrated on money, but yet at the same time most Americans are bad at managing their money. What really is an American? Being an American is not just being born in the USA as most people would think, that is just the technicality of it. For centuries Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. Not just being able to say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and being able to vote for the president, but being able to be free and to be proud that you live in the United States of America.

What does it mean to be American? Webster’s defines an American as: Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture. My definition to be American means that you’re free. Free to say what you want. Free to choose your own religion. Free to vote for whom you want. Free to grow up and pick the occupation you desire. Free to go where you please. Free of being a slave to no one! Free to love whom you want. Most importantly, free to get a good education. Just being free period! As a child, I was taught those things to grow up and realize you’re not as free as they portray us to be.
To be American means that you had to be born here or have something that says that you are an american citizen. Also that you should have some kind of pride towards America, you should be happy that you live here. You should know what is happening in America and/or around it. You should know the history behind it, so you could call yourself American. America means that I am free to do anything you want as long as it’s legal. Living in america, lets you choose a lot of things for example, when I grow up, I can pick any job that i want. I could have a good education. I could vote for any president i want. Well think of it like this our generation has changed a lot throughout the years one big thing is technology we've went from just using paper and pencil to making documents and reading online. If you think about it we get new ways to learn and write stuff online and avoid paper and pencil we don't use it as often anymore, most things we use is on technology. The “American Identity” as I perceive it is to have a state of mind to be part of the American culture. The “American Identity” is about (no matter what your race is) living in America and physically taking part of the American culture. The adjective “American” means a native or inhabitant of North America or South America.
Americanism to me is how one can show their love and care for their country. Some people show their love by serving in the military, and others show it by doing service to their nation in other ways and by impacting those around them. Respecting the objects which exemplify values of the United States also is a major impact of having the characteristic of Americanism.
