One of the biggest events in history is when the colonists decided to declare their independence and break away from Great Britain. Was it necessary though? Yes, it was necessary for America to declare independence from England as they had begun to outgrow their relationship for many years. The three main reasons that contributed to the American Revolution were as follows. The first reason was that the colonists were being taxed unfairly, the second reason was that colonists had no representation in the English Parliament and the third reason was that the governing mother country was an ocean away from the colonies. The colonies were first taken over by the British in the early 1600’s, and by the 1700’s King George governed these Colonies. …show more content…
King George was affecting how the colonists lived by imposing high taxes. The colonists did not like these laws. Parliament was passing laws such as, the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. Both these Acts were established to get money from the colonists to go to Great Britain. The Sugar Act, set a tax on sugar and molasses imported into the colonies and The Stamp Act, taxed all paper and documents. Great Britain was taxing the colonists because they were in debt that stemmed from both the French and the Indian War. Parliament felt that they could tax the American colonists because Great Britain was protecting them in the war. Another Act, The Boston Port Act, closed the port of Boston until the East India Company was paid for the lost tea. This created a great hardship for the people of Boston whose livelihood depended on trade. All of these acts made it hard for the colonists to live independently and was one part of why it was so necessary for the colonists to fight for their …show more content…
The colonies were thriving on their own, as well as maturing. The colonists want to cut loose from the mother country that they felt was way too far way to exert control over them. They wanted to assert their own independence. Communicating was too difficult because it would take 2 months to share news, being that far away. When the colonists had a problem with the ruling of King George it was hard to tell him because of the distance between them. Not to mention the fact that he knew that whatever he did the colonists could not do anything about his
With a great sense of nationalism and pride in the year of 1763 colonists were celebrating the victory from the French and Indian war. This war left the British government in debt. The British tried to pay off the debt by taxing the colonists in many things. American colonists refused to keep up with the tyranny/rule of the British and requested representation in the legislation of new laws in the British Parliament which was denied and that is why it is justified that the Americans colonists broke away from England to gain the independence they had aspired to get after being deprived and oppressed from their freedom.
After a victorious win against the French in the long exhausting Seven Years War, the British were quickly faced with another challenged, war debts. Unable to paid off the debts, England decided to raise taxes on their closest allies, the colonists. To this, it ended salutary neglect as Britain rose taxes on stamps, teas, and anything else that was legal by the king. As the years passes, the colonists slowly became intolerant and agreed to join forces with one another against the British, thus began the american revolution. Moreover, in Yorktown, the final battle of the American Revolution, the colonists won as they proudly claim their victory prize, freedom. After the separation with Britain, some of their steps that led to independence was
A single colony cannot depart from its mother country and lead a revolution; only a whole united nation, such as that of the American colonies, could successfully detach themselves from Mother England. One must take into consideration that up until the eve of revolution, much had happened in the time era of 1607-1776, where the British were still very involved in the American lifestyle and there was no unity within the nation, nevertheless the colonies. However, after the numerous acts imposed by the so called mother that should've taken care of the colonist, more Americans saw the light and realized their
All we heard were shots being fired. All we saw was blood spilled over my fellow soldiers. All we could smell was the scent of defeat. If fighting the Revolution wasn’t helping the colonies, why were we tolerating the harsh conditions and brawling for a strong cause? After the Battle of Lexington, Bunker Hill, and Saratoga, George Washington and his soldiers decided to build a winter camp in December of 1777. Being called the Continental Army, they settled down in Valley Forge, about 18 to 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia. While the British were sitting in their luxurious homes, the soldiers tolerated the 16’ by 14’ huts with problems such as the cold and smoke. However, George Washington had a serious complication on hand. The soldiers’
Taxes, such as the Stamp Act, increased prices of everyday goods, such as cards, newspapers, and Dice.(Doc 3) The reason why the taxes were coming so often was because the French and Indian War just happened. ”King George is a Tyrant. He breaks the laws. He is an enemy to his own people.” (Doc 1) These words were famous words from Patrick Henry on how he thought of the taxes were unfair. During this time, the Americans didn’t have representation for taxes. During this time, The British Empire was basically saying to the colonists “Since the French and Indian War was on the soil of Americans, all colonists must pay for the damage.” “I know not of what others may choose but, as for me, give me liberty or give me death,” was another quote from Patrick Henry.(OI) So, even though the colonists were already mad for unjustly taxation, took action into their own hands. Also, the colonists were unhappy because they had no representation. James Otis started up the quote “Taxation without representation is tyranny,” which meant that it wasn’t fair for the British to tax the american colonists without american
This was mainly due to the colonies' refusal to live and obey British rule. The colonists sole purpose for immigrated to America was escape the British rule. Although the American Revolution began in 1775, there were various events that lead to the war's conception. Some these events were the Stamp Act which required printed materials such a newspapers to be printed on British produced paper. The Townshend acts which were a series of acts passed by Great Britain that taxed the colonies. The Boston Massacre which resulted in 5 colonists being killed after an angry confrontation with British soldiers. The Boston Tea Party which was where the colonists dressed up as American Indian and dumped British produced tea into the harbor. This was in response to the Tea act that monopolized the tea trade within America. All these events helped to spark America's rebellious nature and fight got their independence in the American Revolution
On July 4 1776 in Philadelphia the continental congress and the founding fathers sing the final draft of the Declaration of Independence separating them from britain. The colonist were sick of Great britain’s king using unfair power on them. What were the reason the colonist declared their independence from britain? The colonist wanted independence because they wanted liberty, freedom of choice, and peace.
"...one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." - United States Pledge of Allegiance. Many historians debate whether the American Revolution was revolutionary or not. The War of Independence is an impact because it made an effect on America by increasing women's rights, decreasing Northern slavery, and transforming the Native American's relation with the colonists.
In High schools and freshman history classes, The Reformation is covered quickly and credit is given to Martin Luther and the printing press. Children are told about the rift between the church and Lutherans, then quickly are moved over to the English Reformation and the Catholic Church’s response to these deeds. It is not until one starts to really look deeper in to the history to see that there was much more to the story than the Ninety-five thesis being the flame that started the fire of revolution. It cannot be denied that much of the motivation of the reform was theological but there are many other causes as well. The rise of nationalism, western schism, corruption of curia and the Renaissance all had a part in the movements of the
Colonists sought independence from British government for a multitude of reasons. Tension quickly rose between England and the thirteen colonies due to the unjust taxing without fair representation in Parliament, the colonist’s rights to assemble were taken away by the British, and there were many unreasonable Acts and laws put into place in attempt to have complete control over the colonists as well as intimidate them. For these reasons and the suffering that the colonists endured at the hands of the British government, I feel that the colonists had plenty just causes to separate themselves from England.
However, the colonists were used to the policy of Salutary Neglect which meant that the colonists didn’t have to pay taxes to Britain. When Britain’s policies changed, it took the colonists by shock because there was no warning, and they believed that they had no right to be taxed. Britain’s reason for taxing the colonists was to make up for the debt they got into from defending them in the French and Indian War (Seven Years’ War). Not only did their tax policies change, but they also tried to control the colonist’s trading routes as well. Britain established acts such as the stamp act, sugar act, and tea act to overall get more money and resources from the
Another straw on the camels back was that throughout the 1700's multiple events added to the ticking time bomb of the colonists declaring their independence. In 1774 Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, which were called the intolerable acts by the colonists. When one looks at these acts its obvious to see why they gained the name “intolerable”. These acts closed their ports, Shut down governments bringing them under parliaments control, helped red coats escape justice, and forced the colonists to give up there homes to house the British troops that they were fighting. Just this was the end of the rope for many colonists. Later, in 1775 was the Second Virginia convention was held in Richmond. Patrick Henry gave a beautiful speech that stated “Give me liberty, or give me death!”. These words struck home with many colonists who were now ready to fight for the freedom that they deserved.
The American Revolution taking place first in 1765, was mainly because there was a want for a free and open government. After the battles of Lexington and Concord they colonies were debating whether fighting for independence or reconciliation was the best way to protect their liberties as colonies. If and when people decided that independence was the best option, they were still hesitant about openly seeking this freedom. Though Congress was sending out declarations that the colonies were loyal to King George, they were also preparing for war with the British, which was much of a contradiction. The British also prepared for war and even recruited slaves to fight for them. Many
The thirteen British colonies of North America were slowly going into independence. The people (colonists) were proud of being British, they had no desire to separate from their own country. April 19, 1775 people made calls for independent. Also in that year of July the Second Continental Congress sent the King a request for redress and reconciliation, which Dickinson had to drain indubitably.
There were several acts that were passed without the consideration of the colonists that would force them to pay a ridiculous amount of taxes to the British mainland. One of these acts was named the Stamp Act, which was enacted in 1765, forced the colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper that they used. This would include legal documents, license, commercial contracts and newspapers in the tax. This tax mostly effected the wealthier and influential of the colonists and would force them to unite in opposition. There were several other acts that would be passed that would force the colonists to pay undue taxes to the British, such as the Quartering Act and the Tea
