have enough employers under the age of 35, as the American society is aging (The Legacy of the 1965 Immigration Act, 1995). However, American society faced many previously unknown problems and challenges; the language problem (not all immigrants could speak English), the level of qualification, national features and culture, to name a few examples, which led to the difficulties in integrating immigrants into the new society and perceiving them as a threat to security, national identity, and a source of social tension.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a new wave of immigration hit the United States. These new immigrants typically came from different cultural backgrounds than the “original” immigrants to the United States (the English, Dutch, French, etc). American nativist groups vehemently opposed free, unrestricted immigration because they viewed new immigrants as an inferior race, a threat to American culture, and the root of most of society’s problems. New immigrants were viewed as inferior because the majority of them hailed from non-anglo-saxon countries, and many were of a different denomination or different religion altogether. Nativists also viewed these new immigrants as a threat to American culture because of their lack of English-speaking skills and different cultural practices brought from their homelands. Another

The immigrants were not the only ones undergoing difficulty, however. The United States also experienced difficulty taking in the immigrants. Since almost all immigrants were in dire need of jobs, they tended to settle in urban areas where jobs could be easily located. Often times, immigrants would settle in areas dominated by other immigrants who speak the same language or were from the same country. Consequently, the cities became more congested than ever, and city services were not always successful in keeping up with the surge of newcomers. Although most immigrants were able to find and pursue jobs, many of them were jobs that native-born Americans refused to practice. Regardless of their jobs, living conditions, and/or nationalities, immigrants grew to play a huge part in many areas of American society.
In America, people are changing their views on aging and the elderly. Some of the reasons that the attitudes are changing could be due to more elderly people are remaining in the work place longer, as opposed to retiring early. Riffkin (2014). And there is the fact that we baby boomers are living longer. Even though the U.S. only ranks 53rd with a life expectancy of 79. That’s an increase of one year since 2010. (“The World: Life Expectancy” 2016)
The United State of America has been a place of opportunities where one can easily achieve his or her dreams. Critiques have shown that even a few who are brought up from a poor family have to turn out becoming great people on earth. It is a country that was built by immigrants. It is well known that “America's first European settlers were America's first immigrants. These first citizens were welcome by Native Americans, and they were seen as a threat. By the 19th century, the pattern had been repeated many times, with each new wave of immigrants encountering mixed reactions from already established Americans.” Turner, Laura Leddy. "Challenges Faced by Immigrants in the 19th Century." Synonym. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 June 2017. After the British took over the land from the Native American and started to develop the land, there were other European countries who also migrated to seek greener pastures. They were not accepted easily but had to be screened in order for them to be welcome into the system. The early settlers were so threatened after they were able to get rid of the natives of the land “The German, Irish and Italian immigrants who arrived in America during the 1800s often faced prejudice and mistrust. Many had to overcome language barriers. Others discovered that the challenges they had fled from, such as poverty or religious persecution, were to be encountered in America as well. A mass migration of Germans began in the mid-1830s and continued into the 1880s when
Money is a problem for immigrants because too many migrate to the United States, and they would sell everything from their old country to get in America. The solution was to find a job to prevent being poor, or the immigrants should come prepared with a solution before they migrated to the United States. Crime is another problem because the poverty created a chain of multi-reaction of crime. Education is another problem because the immigrant student did not understand English, so the best solution is to have an ethnic neighbor who understands both English and their language. Also, there might be a teacher who can understand their language, but it very uncommon.
Immigrants did not have a lot of trouble assimilating to America, but there was resentment towards them in and after the years of the American Revolution. They did not have issues marrying into American families or getting jobs. English merchants were relocated during the war of 1812, and Americans forced new immigrants to register with the local government.
The changing environments throughout the ages have caused the movement of thousands of families out of their homelands. Whether forced to make such decisions or doing so by their own desires, all immigrants have had to survive the physical and psychological challenges encountered along the way. To speak about the experiences of all these different people using the same ideas and examples would be quite inaccurate. They all, however, had to live through similar situations and deal with similar problems. Many of them succeeded and found the better future they were looking for. Many others found only hardship and experienced the destruction of their hopes and dreams. All of them were transformed.
Economic factors will play a role in baby boomers working beyond the age of 50. Due
Many immigrants came to America seeking freedom, jobs, and land while others were running from famine and war. While immigrants ran from the problems of their native land, they were running into new problems in America. Americans feared the immigrants would take their jobs or have the right to vote. This fear caused discrimination against the immigrants due to their diverse backgrounds from Germany, Ireland, and China. Immigrants that came to America faced the hardship of discrimination because they did not only stand out with their culture but also because Americans didn’t necessarily want them in America.
According to this article, new immigrants are a problem in the society as they represent a workforce which is cheaper than that offered by citizens of the country. With new immigrants in the picture, the wages of the American citizens is lowered. Moreover, the new immigrants are the stereotype for taking the jobs which would otherwise be taken by the U.S citizens.
Firstly, cultural differences are easily argued to have been the greatest cause of fear in America towards immigrants. Many immigrants had been sold the idea that America was a 'Melting Pot' of cultures, but upon arriving in America, they'd realise this was not the case.
No matter what their reasons for emigrating, where they have come from, or when they left, once here, nearly all immigrants face considerable challenges in adapting and making the United States their new home. Language barriers, unfamiliar surroundings, and sometimes hostile neighbors make it difficult for immigrants to assimilate into American society.
What challenges did the “new immigrants” face (those arriving between 1877 and 1914) that previous waves of immigrants did not? (Discuss at least 2 challenges.)
Ageism also known as age discrimination has an enormous part in our society today. Many people have experienced discrimination against their age daily, even in schools and workplaces. Why is this important? Ageism can relate to everyone in the society; managers, employees, teachers, police officers, principles, etc. For example in a workplace, there are questions you are not allowed to ask during an interview, to your employees and coworkers, etc. Managers can get in trouble for saying stuff like “you can’t do this because your too young”, forcing someone to retire due to their age, not interviewing someone due to their age, As an employer, you cannot be denied a job, training or promotion, or forced to retire, because of your age, etc.
