Cultures are judged deeply from others with can be out of how similar and different one is from another. Many cultures are similar in the way one dresses. Or by the way one eats or even cuisine, but with similarities comes differences. One difference almost all cultures is how the live, and how they perceive it, even down to how they express their own beliefs.
Culture is the overall moral belief, customs, language, and attitudes a person is brought and raised into. Daily, we are exposed to diverse and different cultures everyday which allow us to learn the different values and traditions each culture possess. The importance of observing and learning different customs is beneficial because it can help us better adapt and prevent misunderstandings when we communicate and interact with others. Hispanics and Americans are two huge cultures that have been sharing the same living space for years but are an example of two different civilizations. While both, Hispanics and Americans, share many similarities they both differ in recognition of religion, language,
The Hispanic population has experienced an incredible growth in the past decade in the United States of America. In 2006 it was estimated that the Hispanic cover 11 % of the population in North America. Their Origin is in Mexico and the few Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean. American culture is derived from people who originated from the European nations like Italy and the Great Britain. Cultural identity is very important for every ethnic group as it shapes the culture of that particular faction and therefore, a certain culture cannot realize its own values until it is exposed to another one.
The first main cultural difference would be power distance. The power distance dimension indicates “the point at which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions accept and expect that power is distributed
How does someone from a different culture view American culture? I decided to interview my friend Nino, who is a foreign exchange student from the country of Georgia. Not the state! She explained that the culture in Georgia is very different than American culture. According to Nino, the biggest difference between Georgia culture and American culture are the holidays that we celebrate. Before coming to America, Nino had never heard of Halloween. Halloween is now her favorite holiday. She loves dressing up and getting all the candy.
I think culture differs from one location to another for many reasons. First, location will always affect a culture. Access to natural resources is key in the development of a society. The way a culture operates in the desert will differ greatly from the way a culture operates in the freezing snow. Second, certain traditions and values have been passed down in some cultures that have not been passed down in others. Why is a thumbs up a positive sign in the West, but an offensive
Textbooks, teachers, and proud historians preached false facts on how America’s society was founded on ideals of democracy and equality. In reality, the truth was hidden beneath prejudice whites and the subordinated blacks that had no voice. Those were the same blacks that shaped many of the aspects in Americans lives since the 16th century. America’s foundation was not built upon liberty and mutual respect for all human beings, but instead upon a racial system of oppression, and inequality constructed solely to benefit white Americans. But knowledge like this was not taught, especially to blacks. Their educational systems constantly created deeper deception on their people, culture, and heritage. Blacks along with other races were not being
Lane Kenworthy in Foreign Affairs journal argues that it is hard nowadays make it in America because America has of late stopped being the land of equal opportunity both to its citizens as well as nonresidents or non-citizens. there is now less equality of opportunity in the United States than in most other wealthy democratic nations such as Canada, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom. As much as both Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney agreed on ensuring that equality prevails in the country, Barrack Obama believed that no matter where you come from or your cultural, racial or social background or gender, you have what it takes to succeed in the country. Ensuring equality of opportunities has not been easy because it has been difficult to access equal job opportunities and quality as well as affordable education institutions that equips one with the required skills needed in the job market (Kenworthy,2012).
Having been born in America, the American culture differs slightly from the British culture particularly due to the influence the British exerted on North Americans during the colonial period. Further, most of the Americans are immigrants from other countries, with most of the people coming from the United Kingdom and Ireland. The eminent cultural differences between the two cultures is that the behavior of people in the British culture are laid back while their American counterparts are more hectic and appear to be in a hurry. The British do not like to engage in conversations with strangers and tend to stick to their close friends while Americans are social to strangers in public places.
Our society has made many steps in the right direction to equality within the last 10 years alone. A few examples being, an African American president, homosexuality in the military, and more recently same sex marriage allowed in all 50 states. Some would say we have made amazing progress with the issue of equality in today’s age, yet there are still many issues proving that we haven’t done our job completely. So with that being said, our government has only protected a limited amount of freedoms.
American culture can be summed up into one word, discrimination. From the time Europeans first came to the Americas, prejudice has been a part of the life in the Americas. In 1492 Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas, and found it to be easily conquered and the people taken advantage of. Slavery was a part of colonial America, written into the Constitution of the United States, remained legal until 1865, and the state of Mississippi did not officially abolish slavery until 2013. Civil rights have been an ongoing struggle for many groups in America since its inception, even if you were white and European, it did not automatically ensure you rights in the United States. The list of groups discriminated on by those living in America
