America’s Dirty Little Secrets “My literal responsibility as director of the CIA with regard to covert action was to inform the Congress - not to seek their approval; to inform.” Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said this quote concerning who the CIA reports to. Most American’s think that since the CIA is part of the government, that it held responsible by the rest of the government. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that they are completely wrong. The way the CIA was created caused many atrocities to be committed by them without any ramifications. After the end of World War II, the United States entered war, a cold war to be exact. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Union, was a communist nation that was the United States rival. After World War II, the world was left with just two superpowers, the two super rivals. These two countries fought for the control of the world. The Soviet Union wanted a communist world, while the United States fought for a free world. One of the United State’s main tools was the CIA. In 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, creating the Central Intelligence Agency. The act also created the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The National Security Act has helped the country in ways no regular citizen will ever know, with these agencies protecting the United States in ways unimaginable.
