America's Greatest Inventions

The 1900s were a big turning point in men’s fashion, men discovered they could look good and feel good at the same time. During this time they wore three-piece suits that included a waistcoat or vest and a matching straight, loose-fitting jacket or sack. These were usually worn with contrasting slacks. Pants were worn cuffed and ankle high and were pleaded in the front and back. Long boots were worn to cover the space between the ankles and feet.

In my opinion, the automobile and the utilization of electricity have been two of the most important inventions in United States history. The invention of the car expanded our horizons in the fact that citizens were able to travel, but also because people could live in places other than the city. Also, the utilization of electricity has become a part of life that we would not know how to live without. Electricity has allowed for businesses and homes to run in a convenient and efficient manner. Without electricity, we as a nation would have very little technology.

One of the funniest although interesting inventions I stumbled upon was, sliced bread! Bread was probably made about 12,000 years ago, by mixing grains and water. It was probably tough and was cooked by putting hot coals on it. It wasn’t until about 1912 that Fredrick Rohwedder had the idea to create a bred slicer. All the bakers he talked to complained that the loves would go stale. So Rohwedder created a wrapper. It was dubbed The Manhattan Project and consisted of some of the most brilliant physicists at the time such as Albert Einstein. Then, in 1945 arguably the most powerful and controversial technology was developed. This was the nuclear bomb and it completely changed the world forever. This weapon could be used to decimate entire cities and the only time it was ever used during any conflict was in 1945 (Shalett, n.d.). Womens style varied on where you where. In the more rural or smaller towns , women dressed plainly and used homemade fabrics, to save money for their men out at war.

Depending on their job, wealth, and other factors, clothing people wore may have varied. But it was not uncommon for women to wear dresses(Some more high end than others ) or cotton print shirts and skirts. It was common to see a man in a bit more casual clothes rather than suits almost all around like previous decades.

Most ladies wore a dress or very fancy clothing. Men usually wear a tuxedo or very nice attire. In 2017 we don’t wear as many fancy things. We wear more fancy things for dinner or special occasions. Men usually just wear casual clothing or gym clothes. Back then they wore old things that were very dressy. In the Red Scarf Girl she wore a white shirt and a red tie.

In the 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, many new household appliances came out to American consumers. One of them was the electric powered washing machine that clean clothes in an efficient and easy way. This product, the Thor, was a drum like washer with a tub and a electric motor and was created by Alva J. Fisher in 1908 (Bellis). Also,a vacuum cleaner is an electric tool used to suction up dust and small objects on floors. This tool was created by Hubert Cecil Booth and David T. Kenney in 1901 by using air for the separation of dirt (Green). Another appliance, the electric refrigerator, is a tool that keeps your food and drinks cold and fresh. The refrigerator was invented by Fred W. Wolf in 1913 and was a icebox with a refrigeration unit connected to the top (Chapman). All of these appliances made the twenties roar because it made labor easier around the household.

The plow was a very important invention. Around 600 A.D. the plow led food production to its all-time high. Another invention that helped with supplies around 787 A.D. was the tidal mill. The tidal mill would collect and store water during a high tide. Around the 9th century the hour glass was invented. The hour glass helped sailors tell time while out at sea. The blast furnace was invented around 12th century A.D. The slag that was produced from the furnace was used to invent liquor. Eyeglasses were invented around the 13th century. They were used mostly for reading. They also wore them while spinning wool. The spinning wheel they used was invented around the 13th century also.
