From the founding of this country to today, America has been built on a nation of immigrants. Today, with the increase of our nations illegal immigrant population, the effects are bringing the immigration policy of the United States into question. The problem with America's immigration system is that the people that are here illegally are not taking it seriously, yet they still want to have all of the rights that legal law abiding United States citizens have. Immigration has been a hot button issue in all three branches of the government, and more and more citizens are asking that something be done about our immigration policy. America's immigration system is broken and we need to do something to fix it before it is to far gone. The first …show more content…
What is a sanctuary city? According to the Apsan Law Offices, [A]Sanctuary city is a name given to a city in the United States that follows certain procedures that shelters illegal immigrants. These procedures can be by law (de jure) or they can be by action (de facto). The term most commonly is used for cities that do not permit municipal funds or resources to be applied in furtherance of enforcement of federal immigration laws. These cities normally do not permit police or municipal employees to inquire about one's immigration status. (Apsan Law Offices )
This is where i have a big problem with the sanctuary city ideal. The "sanctuary cities" do not allow the cities funds or resources to be applied for the enforcement of FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAWS. In my eyes, not enforcing a federal law is equivalent to breaking that law, and if the average U.S. Citizen was to break a federal law, they would be sent to a federal prison. Now, I understand that it would be a waste of time and resources to stop people on the street and ask them for their documents, just because they look like they are not of legal status, but if someone is arrested and "booked" what would be the harm in sending that criminal back to where they belong to commit their crimes

In the executive branch we have President Barack Obama who has come out very strongly for immigration reform. President Obama has even gone as far as creating an executive order for the matter. According to the Education Journal, President Obama has announced the most sweeping executive action on immigration in decades to ease the threat of deportation for the parents of millions of America's schoolchildren. By offering temporary legal status to an estimated five million undocumented immigrants, along with an indefinite reprieve from deportation, Obama's action will ease longstanding concerns among educators about separating school-aged children from their parents and guardians. (Education Journal 23)
President Obama wants the parents (who are undocumented) to feel safe about being able to bring their children to school, go to the grocery store, even to drive down the road, without fear of being
Immigration Reform is obviously a big issue in America today. I mean everywhere you go; you either see something about or read about it. There is no exact number as to how many illegal immigrants cross the border, but it is estimated to be around 11 to 12 million. This has become a major political and social issue because of the continued flow of illegal immigrants. There is nothing really around that will stop this problem. Nothing has really been done, I mean there are borders and all, but who watches the borders to stop the immigration and even so there is no one there to protect the people who are there trying to prevent it. Anything can happen to the people who are watching the borders such as being shot at and things of the nature,
"The federal government doesn't always fully reimburse these localities for the expenses uncured for incarcerate them. So they'd rather just say no to the federal government," explains Political Scientist at Elmira College, Dr. Jim Twombly. President Trump has said he will fine any community deeming itself a sanctuary city. "Now the president is saying 'well okay, I'm going to double punish you. I'm not only going to reimburse you for that incarceration, I'm going to take away other funds the federal government would give to you," says Twombly.
As Donald Trump’s presidency unfolds his promise to crack down on immigration and cut funding to sanctuary cities is becoming a reality, however, each city is handling it differently. Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump promised to crack down on illegal immigrants and “sanctuary cities”. Sanctuary city is a vague term that is being thrown around right now. It loosely refers to a towns or cities that don’t immediately turn over illegals who commit small crimes, and don’t cooperate fully with immigration services (“Sanctuary Cities: Top 3 Pros and Cons”). Most Texas cities have vowed to remain loyal to their citizens, and not rip families apart due to politics and money. Cutting federal funding to a city is not an
According to Fox News, in the 2017 Texas Legislature session, Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated he expected the Texas Legislature to pass Senate Bill 4, requiring local governments to enforce migrant detainees at local jails and withhold state grants if they do not comply. Thus, sanctuary cities within the State are no longer permitted without financial repercussion. Senator Charles Perry, the bill’s sponsor, stated “President-elect Donald Trump’s election made it clear that immigration must be a priority. Thus, local policies cannot be allowed to undercut state and federal policies (Ward 2017).” Although there is a concern that illegal immigrants commit crimes and take
An “Illegal Immigrant” is someone who avoids inspection and/or overstays the period of time given to them as a tourist, business person, or a visitor(Dictonary.com). Illegal Immigrants need Sanctuary cities and open borders, but in reality, Sanctuary cites do not need Illegal Immigrants, and open borders because they are very well populated. According to Daily Signal, a news organization for society, news editor Josh Siegel posted a chart of the top U.S cities with the highest illegal population. The current population census in the top four sanctuary cities that are listed below are: Los Angeles, 4,041,707 people(Grad), New York City 8,537,637 people(ny.gov), Chicago 2,720,546 people (United States Census Bureau), and lastly Seattle, 684,451(Schlosser). Los Angeles and New York City, both have the highest estimated illegal population, and population census. So, if they do not put some effort in by making immigrants follow the legal process to become a citizen in the United States, then ICE will come and start deporting illegals which could decline Los Angeles, and New York City’s population drastically. Well, actually most city administrators think it is politically correct to have Sanctuary cities regardless of the consequences are looming around because it is a political agenda that Democrats favor more than the Republicans. Illegal Immigration and the
Any place of refuge or asylum can be a sanctuary, though there is no specific legal definition to what constitutes a sanctuary jurisdiction. These communities can be states, cities or counties with established policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation. The state of Maryland is pushing for a bill that will limit available state and local resources during the enforcement of immigration laws. Whilst some people are of an opinion that the state government should not be writing laws shielding illegal immigrants from US federal government immigration laws, others maintain that Maryland officials should move forward with their ideas of a sanctuary. There is debate over the safety of immigrants and of
The history of the “sanctuary city” designation is vague in its origin and definition, the word sanctuary meant something to those refugees, and to a lot of congregations all over the country who provided them with shelter. As for today, the term has become charged and in some ways toxic. With hundreds of cities considered sanctuary jurisdictions, five states and 644 counties have policies limiting local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal
Sanctuary cities are considered to be havens for undocumented immigrants who have entered the United States for economic opportunities, to escape violence, or other various reasons. One of the first sanctuary cities in the country was Los Angeles, which along with the rest of Los Angeles County is home to roughly 814,000 undocumented immigrants as of 2013 (PPIC). Many of these undocumented immigrants have never committed a criminal act outside of the civil offence of entering the country without the proper immigration documents. While there may be flaws to sanctuary cities, Los Angeles’ status as a sanctuary city is vital to the protection of not only the undocumented immigrants living there but the rest of the community as well.
A Sanctuary city is a city that does not permit municipal funds or resources to be applied in furtherance of enforcement of federal immigration. However, Sanctuary cities are not and should not be a practice within the United States. The problem is that Sanctuary cities defy federal law, endangers the citizens of that city and propose taxes that do not benefit the people who pay them.
When discussing current events, however, we need to refine this definition. An article, titled “Sanctuary Cities in Name Only,” does a spectacular job in defining “sanctuary” very specifically in the context of current events. According to the article, to become a sanctuary, cities should never allow local police to “detain noncitizens on the federal government’s behalf.” Repeatedly, this article highlights the important role that local police departments have in carrying out Trump’s mass deportation plan. How can ICE, by itself, track and sort millions of unauthorized immigrants in the country? It is frankly impossible, but it relies on the help of local police departments to
Can sanctuary cities be effective in both the policing and protection of undocumented citizens and if so, how will they regulate the population in question? A main issue being displayed here is a lack of standardized regulations being set by sanctuary cities. Instead of setting a precedent of resisting government immigration policies, these efforts would better have spent towards setting up and promoting programs that assist illegal immigrants in becoming American citizens. This paper will look at articles regarding sanctuary cities from Slate, Vox and the Wall Street Journal and decide which has the strongest argument.
A sanctuary city is a city where that specific city limits there laws to enforce immigration laws. Sanctuary cities are located all across the country. The area where there is the most of are the coast and are located near some major airports. There are many pros and cons to these things. President Donald Trump is very against these. On his 5th day in office he tried to support immigration enforcement. He has even signed an executive order denying any funding toward sanctuary cities. It's a very confusing topic. Since there really is no law many immigrants who live there can get away with anything. About 80% of the United States citizens oppose these cities because of taxes, crime, and many more things.
The name “sanctuary cities” comes from the 1980s protests of federal immigration policies that refused shelter to refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala. It all began when the Salvadoran government had inflicted martial law on all its citizens, which in effect pronounced the beginning of mass killings in the country. The movement was formed to offer protection to these undocumented refugees that were fleeing the Central American wars that plagued their homes. An estimated 18,000 to 20,000 people were killed or “disappeared” in the 1980’s alone. Thousands of Salvadorans fled the violence, coming north through Mexico to the United States. In July of 1980, two dozen or more Salvadorans who were crossing the Sonoran Desert were deserted by their
The reforming of America?s immigration policy is something that can no longer be avoided and must be dealt with as soon as possible. Years of neglect by governmental agencies and policies makers have now made this issue one of the biggest in American politics. First of it must be understood that immigration does no only effect curtain areas of the country and curtain aspect of public life but rather all of American life. Both legal and illegal immigration affect major issues such as jobs availability for all citizens, wages, education in public schools system and in general, health care issues, and the homeland security.
The concept of sanctuary has existed since ancient times. There has always been a desire in communities across the world to provide hospitality to those in need. Whether it be providing shelter in a shrine in ancient Greece, or allowing the wrongly accused to hide away in churches during the middle ages in central Europe, refuge has come in many forms throughout history and across the world to protect people unjustly in trouble with the law. This concept has wormed itself into policy and local government as cities across America have created laws and loopholes that allow refugees and illegal immigrants to bypass unfair deportation policies that don’t account for circumstance. Even though these sanctuary cities have been around for decades,
