Stress is a huge factor in everyday life; something that most people experience on a daily basis, and indeed, suffer from without ever really giving it much thought at all. It is defined as “the process by which we [human beings] appraise and cope with environmental threats and challenges” (Myers, 2014, p. 2.9), and the National Institute of Mental Health states that stress is “the brain’s response to any demand” (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). It has the ability to affect the human body in both positive and negative ways, and according to David Myers, it is all in how we face these challenges (2014, p. 2.9) whether we will succeed or end up feeling even more stressed out than before. It is for this reason that the concept of
Stress is a major factor in the health and happiness of Americans, but what ignites stress? Why is it so common? How can it be helped and prevented? Why is it so unhealthy? Why does it overtake the mind? Every individual deals with some form of stress throughout their daily lives. In conclusion, my topic was about the stress in America. I was interested in this topic, because I wanted to see stress around the regions of American and what was the result of their stress levels. I wanted you to be interested in this topic, because it gave you a general look at how stress is a problem in our country as of today, I showed you why some parts of our country were more stressed than other parts and I provided you a study of how some people in my class felt about stress. I defined stress as “The nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it”. It also involves depression, anger or just simply being tired of doing something. The first article was titled “Which Stress Matters? The Examination of Temporal Aspects of Stress”. This article looked at the past, present and expected future on distress. It involved thirty-eight males and forty-one females, who were spouses of patients hospitalized for non-life-threatening diseases. The type of method that this
Sara Munns in her essay “Keep Calm And Stress On”, argues the negative perception of stress, propagated by modern society has led to an unnecessary push towards lifestyles aimed at mitigating stress in daily life. To give her readers a new perspective of stress, she focuses on the positive aspects of stress and how with the proper view it can benefit its recipient. In this essay I will first, analyze the various claims made by Miss Munns, as well as the assumptions that correspond with these claims, and finally I will conclude by giving a personal account of the overall effectiveness this essay has had on my perception of stress.
everyday life. When there are many predicaments and many happenings that it can’t manage the problem. It will impel to stress. There are three causes as to why some people are always stressed than others.
Initially we had decided to simply ask our participants whether they were stressed or not. However we realised this was too subjective of a method, and therefore decided to use the Kanner (1981) daily hassles questionnaire to more objectively operationalise levels of
The United States’ eminent “competitive spirit” is a major characteristic that differentiates the U.S. workforce from other countries. This competitiveness is a key component in American society as it pushes workers to not only produce more but to increase his/her standard of living (Nixon). While competitiveness can lead to a flourishing society, oftentimes this competitiveness burdens workers, raising the amount of stress on a person. A study conducted by Harvard School of Public Health reported that out of 2,505 respondents, 53% felt a “great deal of stress in the past month” was a result of work affirming the correlation between stress and work (“The Burden of Stress in America”). As job markets are drastically becoming more competitive,
Stress is part of our lives. We live with it, deal with it, and above all worry about it. Our way of life, the area in which we live, the economy, and our jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause us to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect many people at the same time and are “disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks”. (p418). Other factors are personal stressors and can be caused by events such as a divorce, death or a loved one or the loss of a job. (Feldman, 2009). The
Everybody has at least one thing in common. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed, heartbreak, you’re right, but that’s not the answer I’m looking for. The correct answer is stress. Everyone has stress in his or her life at one point or another. It’s one of many inevitable parts of life. The real question is, how is stress handled in our society? A person is defined by how they handle the stressors in their lives and how they overcome stressful moments. This paper will explore the aspects of
