Early ____________________________ (Childhood)
1. Birth
a. Amish families have an average of seven children per family, although it is not uncommon for some families to have between thirteen and sixteen children.
b. Children are often born at home and in birthing centers for the following reasons:
• __________________ (Cost) - Amish do not carry medical insurance, and since most have 7-16 children, hospital bills can become quite expensive
• ___________________ (Comfort) - The home environment offers more comfort and flexibility
• ____________________(Care) - Amish appreciate midwives and doctors who understand Amish culture more than doctors and nurses in stressful and routine hospital settings
c. Pregnancies

3. __________________ (Teachers)
a. One teacher typically handles all eight grades; sometimes, she is provided with an assistant.
b. In most cases, the teacher is a female and single (sometimes just having graduated from school from the year before)
c. A teacher is selected for showing good moral character, Christian values, and for having an interest in teaching.
d. On rare occasions, a new community might hire a non-Amish teacher until they have one of their own to take over.
4. ___________________________ (Education)
a. Students start school at age 6 and graduate with the equivalent of about a fifth grade education at age 14 or 15 (this varies from school to school, depending on the teacher’s own education).
b. Students are taught basic Math, Reading, Writing, English
i. By the time a student reaches the second grade, he or she is required to speak the English language at all times while school is in session. Those who get caught speaking the Mother Tongue, are disciplined.

i. Too many F’s in a school year will fail the student and require the student to take the same grade a second time.
d. The Amish school day is divided into periods covering:
i. The various subjects ii. Lunch iii. Two recess periods
In an average Amish family it consist of, a mother, father with an average of 7 children. Their grandparents play a vital part of the family because once they pass; the children inherit their land, property and wisdom. The father of the family is the bread winner (Providing the family with money, food and shelter). Many Amish men seek jobs in areas such as
First off, it’s important to understand the difference between learning and education. Learning is the ability of an individual’s brain to acquire and retain information for a lifetime, whereas education is an aide to further strengthen a student’s learning capacity with the use of resources: teachers, libraries, classroom environment, etc. All students are essentially equal when they enter the educational environment, however students who don’t speak English have an unfair disadvantage in the american educational system.
Then they attend secondary school from ages twelve to fifteen. At age fifteen teenagers can go on to upper secondary education for three years and then to a Technological College or University (APEC, 2012).
The primary goal of any school district’s English Language Learner policy should be to ensure that all students receive equitable access to the curriculum. The Office of Civil Rights memorandum (May 25, 1970) requires school districts to take affirmative steps to provide equal access to instructional program for students with limited English proficiency. The Illinois Constitution guarantees every child from kindergarten through grade 12, access to a free public education; which means, regardless of a child’s home language, he/she deserves a free and appropriate education (Illinois State Board of Education, 1998).
“Language is power. If you cannot understand or be understood you have no power. You are at the mercy of everyone.” – (Rudat, 1994, Stow, Dodd 356) Should Americans be required to learn Spanish as a second language? The construction of our nation stands on documents written in English, however English is not our official language nor has it ever been. America is a “melting pot” in which English is the most prominent language, followed closely by Spanish. Requiring Americans to learn Spanish is a great controversy; I strongly believe that it should be a requirement, because it improves academic achievements, career success, and cultural and social understanding. The controversy has great counter arguments such as the double standard Americans are held to, and further division of the country. Regarding the counterarguments, I still firmly believe that it should be a requirement because the integration of a second language in our schools is more beneficial to our country’s success as a whole.
School governors, the head teacher will report incidents to the governors as they have a responsibility of reviewing school policies and behaviours.
Even back when I was in high school students who were given F’s were usually just the students that either never came to class or those that were constantly rude towards teachers. Of course even as a student I never liked to see my fellow peers failing the
These differences contribute to the Amish wanting to remain isolated from the US and the rest of the world. While they may be isolated, that does not mean that they do not accept outside help every once in a while. There are things that sometimes they cannot do alone and it requires help from outsiders. For example, if they are experiencing legal trouble, besides relying on their own community (and they would still do), they would turn to outside help because, as stated earlier, there are things that they would rather leave to the outsider that is assisting them. However, while the Amish may require outside help from time to time, that does not mean that the US isn’t benefiting from them in some
An important aspect of nursing care is being culturally aware. According to Purnell (2014), Amish health-care practices are centered around a strong spirituality connection with God, and that God is the healer. There are three factors that influence Amish health-care
Diverse cultures within the United States are rapidly developing and growing and the educational sector is the number one target to ensure that English –learners are receiving adequate education. Within the educational sector there are administrators and teachers who are involved in students lives on a daily basis to ensure that education is equal. In order to achieve the vital objective of equality, socio-cultural influences on ELL students, bilingualism and home language use, parental and community resources, and partnerships between families and schools all have to be considered to provide an opportunity for equal education.
In the American schooling system, children begin primary school around the age of six, this is called elementary school and most students stay there for five to six years before they go on to secondary school which involves middle school and high school. After graduating high school some students may go on to “higher education” known as college, but any schooling done after high school is no longer mandatory.
The Amish are a secluded religious group with the majority living in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. They avoid modernization and the typical American lifestyle. This writer is from Indiana and remembers seeing a slow moving large black object early one morning moving across an interstate overpass. It was beautiful and fascinating as the giant horse was solid black, the carriage was black and the gentleman was wearing all black. The sun was just rising and it woke this writer up while driving with heavy eyes. This paper seeks to explore Amish cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes in order to provide culturally competent nursing health care. It is imperative for nurses to provide culturally competent care because nurses serve as patient advocates. This role includes respecting the rights and dignity of all patients. Nurses are not necessarily as culturally diverse as the populations they serve, so it is important to learn about different cultures such as the Amish.
This ensures every industry has a motivated, skilled workforce. Schooling starts at the age of 5, with basic classes such as arithmetic, history, and science, along with physical education, and some life skills. At age 12, students are split into more specific schools and education paths based on their proficiencies, although the student has a say in where they go. Students stay in these schools, fine-tuning their skills and learning which profession they are most proficient in. At 16, they go into a specialized school for their profession of choice.
usually children that are age 6 to 10 years old. Their education just is continued on from kindergarten. Children attend school all day in first through fourth grade. Most children attend school 10 months of the year. Depending on where you live is when you start school and end the school year. Some school districts have what they call a year round or extended school year. That is when they have time off at different parts of the year instead of having two months off at one time. Schools teach various things in their daily schedules depending on the state and school district. Most are pretty common though. Like the subject English which includes reading, spelling, writing, and everything that coincides with the subject. Math is also
If teachers act as the “language police” in their classrooms, how do they decide what is considered a violation and what is considered within acceptable bounds? Who decides what language is within the acceptable bounds? When teachers avoid being “language cops,” are they hurting their students by deemphasizing standard English that is prominent in the world? These are questions that need to be acknowledged by educators in order for there to be a significant change in how students’ home languages are perceived and welcomed into the curriculum.
