In the fifteenth century, a Catholic priest joined a growing religious order call the Mennonites who worshiped in Zurich Switzerland. The Mennonites were an order based upon beliefs founded on the New Testament of the Bible. During the late sixteenth century, the Mennonite order split under the guidance of Jacob Amman to form a new, more conservative order called the Amish. During the sixteenth century, several religions were not viewed favorably by the European governments. Some were treated so harshly that they sought new locations where they would have greater freedom to worship as their religious orders preferred. One such group were the Amish and by the late sixteenth century they were forced from Switzerland and other European countries by severe persecution to immigrate to America. …show more content…

The Amish way of life was one of heavy reliance on agriculture and simple means. Their communities thrived and grew rapidly in America. As the need for more land increased communities expanded and settled in new territories in America. I have observed the Amish on many occasions and find the Amish to be kind and respectful within the general community of New Wilmington. The Amish are a conservative people who appear to have strong community and religious beliefs. It makes me proud to be a member of a country that was established on freedoms and ideals that are still supported and accepted today.
